markets Digital Strategy wellness reports Festive shopping via ecommerce may be changing both consumer and societal behaviour
ecommerce companies are slated to ship merchandise worth $12 bn in the latest festive season, a rise of 23% vs last year. Quick commerce, the Shinkansen sibling, may well contribute to nearly 10% of this figure. Piyush Goyal has publicly expressed concern about online discounting policies ravaging small retailers. All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) has complained to large manufacturers about rampant transactional favouritism to the digital universe. Flipkart's 2024 'Big Billion Day' attracted over 33 cr user visits over just two days, while Meesho's 'Mega Blockbuster Sale' recorded a 100% growth in Day 1 sales. Both brands have noted a clear increase in the demand from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, spurred by improving logistics. Physical channels are still going strong. But, clearly, the shift towards device-to-home is irreversible, aided by a seminal shift in consumer behaviour across categories, from dining to dressing. Quickcom, reportedly growing at over 280% over the last 24 months, has led to an influx of new categories, including consumer electronics.

NEW DELHI: In recent years, retail investors have emerged as a formidable force in India’s equity markets, driven primarily by the growth of mutual fund investments through systematic investment plans (SIPs). However, this influx of «uninformed» retail money is inadvertently creating exit opportunities for seasoned «smart money» investors—such as promoters, private equity funds, and multinational corporations (MNCs). While these sophisticated investors capitalize on elevated valuations, they are taking money home, raising concerns about unintended consequences. Could retail money be inflating market valuations to unsustainable levels and crowding out foreign portfolio investments (FPIs)?

markets UPS Strategy Experts Schools Car sales in India: Slow start in FY25 but festive season boost expected
Car sales in the first half of the fiscal year has been slower than expected, but with the onset of the festive season demand is expected to gain momentum helping bringing down stocks in the network, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Shailesh Chandra said. As per data available with the industry body, sales of cars, sedans and utility vehicles went up by a modest 0.5% to 2,081,143 units between April and September FY25, signalling a weakening of demand in the third largest automobile market in the world. Passenger vehicle sales in India rose by 8.4% to a record 4.22 million units in FY24. Chandra said, “The expectation was slightly better than (sales growth being) flattish. While April was good, sales in May and June did not play out as per expectation, which impacted industry volumes adversely. In September too, two weeks of Shraddh (considered by consumers as inauspicious for making purchases) affected retails. But now with the start of festival period, sales on-ground seem to be doing well.”
