IAEA chief backs India's entry into nuke club NSG
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, as he backed the country's entry into the coveted Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). Speaking to ET during his visit to India this week, Grossi stressed that countries that have important nuclear programmes and that manifest a wish to participate in a group (NSG) that fosters responsible trade in nuclear should be welcome. The IAEA director general recalled how when he was president of the NSG «we got very close». «The problem was not India in itself, it was the multilateral dynamic at the time.» Some countries including China and New Zealand had expressed reservations about India's entry into NSG. The NSG is a 48-member group that seeks to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons by regulating the export of nuclear materials and technology. The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog visited India to attend the Raisina Dialogue, and strengthen cooperation on nuclear energy and cancer care, among other issues. «I am proud to recognise Tata Memorial as an IAEA Rays of Hope Anchor Centre. A leader of the Global South, India has built strong cancer care expertise — now it's time to share it with the world. With this partnership, we will bring India's know-how to regions that need it most,» he said.

Shark or Uber? Octopus catches a free ride in the wild. Watch the viral moment
Maori octopus gripping onto the back of a shortfin mako shark, one of the fastest predators in the sea. Marine scientists from the University of Auckland first observed this peculiar scene in December 2023 while studying the waters of the Hauraki Gulf near New Zealand’s North Island. The footage, recently released, provides a fascinating glimpse into the unusual interaction, which researchers have dubbed the “sharktopus.” As the shark moved effortlessly through the water, the octopus clung tightly, seemingly enjoying the ride. This unexpected marine encounter has left viewers both entertained and intrigued. While it’s unclear why the octopus latched onto the shark, the footage offers a rare glimpse into the complex and often surprising interactions between ocean creatures.

Waikato school's girl student brutally thrashed, head stomped upon by another student
Waikato reported three students being allegedly assaulted in a week. In one of the incidents, a 13-year-old girl student was brutally beaten up by another inside the school premises. A video of the incident from Morrinsville College in Waikato in shows the victim being chased by the alleged assaulter who goes on to hold her by her hair and then violently pushes her to the ground. The assaulter then punched and kicked the the girl several times and even stomps on her head. However, the school has denied that its students were indulging in violent act on regular basis. According to the victim's parents, their daughter had faced physical assault in the school earlier too. They alleged that a few days before their daughter was violently attacked, the same girl student had tried to trip her by sticking her leg out in front of her as she walked past. She was later accosted by the girl who asked her to apologise for deliberately walking into her friend’s leg, the parents added. According to a New Zealand media outlet, her parents stated that their daughter “pulled a sickie and got sent home from school to try and avoid the situation.” her parents said.

India alerted New Zealand on Khalistan issue, says Jaideep Mazumdar
Addressing the issue, Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar in a special briefing of the Ministry of External Affairs stated, «About Khalistan, this was an issue that came up… We do alert our friends to the activities of anti-India elements in their countries and their abuse of freedom of speech and other democratic freedoms to glorify terrorism and to threaten attacks against our diplomats, our parliament or our events in India. So these were also conveyed. The government of New Zealand has been receptive and has taken our concerns on board in the past as well.» India has been vocal about its stance against separatist movements operating from foreign soil. The meeting with Luxon comes at a time when the Indian government has been urging international partners to take stronger action against individuals and groups involved in extremist activities. New Zealand has previously acknowledged such concerns, and India expects continued cooperation in addressing these threats. Meanwhile, India's concerns over Khalistani separatist activities are not limited to New Zealand. Recently, India formally raised the issue with the United Kingdom following a security breach during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to London. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, «We have conveyed our deep concern to the UK authorities about the breach of security arrangements by UK-based separatist and extremist elements during EAM's visit.»
