UPSC drops lateral-entry drive amid quota row
central government departments through lateral entry following a request from the Centre, which was forced to take the step following backlash from both BJP allies and Opposition. They had dubbed the move «anti-reservation». A day after Opposition and BJP allies — Chirag Paswan and Janata Dal (United) — expressed concerns over the issue of lateral entry, Union minister of state for personnel Jitendra Singh wrote to UPSC chairperson Preeti Sudan, urging her to cancel the advertisement. In the letter, Singh said that for Prime Minister Narendra Modi reservation in public employment is a cornerstone of «our social justice framework», aimed at addressing historical injustices and promoting inclusivity.

Congress says govt's lateral entry U-turn due to criticism by Leaders of Opposition in LS, RS
Congress on Tuesday claimed that the Centre's move to withdraw the latest advertisement for lateral entry in bureaucracy was due to the criticism by the Leaders of the Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge — along with others. The remarks came after Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh wrote to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Chairman Preeti Sudan and asked her to cancel the advertisement so that marginalised communities get their rightful representation in government services. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh tagged Singh's letter and said on X, «A letter from a Union Minister working under a non-biological PM to a Constitutional authority without a date. What pathetic governance this is.» «Even so, this is clearly the impact of the criticism of the Leaders of the Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and others,» he said in another post.

Pakistan's gender gap index hits rock bottom, second worst globally
Global Gender Gap Index by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Pakistan finds itself near the bottom of the list, with only Sudan ranked lower among 146 nations surveyed. This marks a further decline from its 142nd position last year, reflecting a worsening situation for women in the country, Dawn reported. Women's rights activists have issued impassioned pleas for both state and societal commitment to address gender disparities effectively. They emphasise the need to redefine the roles prescribed to women by Pakistsociety and the government. The annual index evaluates gender parity across four critical dimensions: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. Leading nations in gender parity include Iceland, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden, as reported by Dawn.

Iran’s better, stealthier drones are remaking global warfare
The drone in the video, which is clearly modeled after Iran’s Ababil model — the workhorse of paramilitaries across the Middle East since it was developed in the 1990s — reflected a design tweak: Its two front tires, instead of the usual one, provided actual battlefield evidence that Sudan is modifying the Iranian drone into its own weapon, which it calls the Zagel-3. That revelation follows the emergence in the last two years of ramped-up Iranian drone production in at least five other countries, from South America to Central Asia. Most recently, Russia has started making Iranian drones for its war in Ukraine, bringing the number of countries using Iranian technology, assistance, or parts to at least a dozen.
