AI models make stuff up. How can hallucinations be controlled?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is promptly met by a response that is confident, coherent and just plain wrong. In an AI model, such tendencies are usually described as hallucinations. A more informal word exists, however: these are the qualities of a great bullshitter.

Bond yields, FII action among 9 factors to impact D-Street movement this week
Nifty ended with weekly gains of 0.75% with leadership taken by banks, auto and metals. When markets resume trading on Monday, a host of important domestic and global events lined up during the holiday-shortened week are likely to impact them. Commenting on the day's trade, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities said that Nifty struggled to withstand the selling pressure at higher levels after beginning the day on a positive note and ultimately closing at the day's lowest point. According to him, the overall sentiments remain positive and the index must surpass the 22,400 mark to trigger a new leg of rally. «A decisive breakthrough above 22,400 could propel the index towards 22,600. On the downside, support is situated at 22,250-22,200,» De said.

India comes full circuit: Global tech giants set sights on the country for electronics production
semiconductor chip, that is used within the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi component of your phone, could’ve crossed international borders as many as 70 times before it reached you. And this entire process can take up to 100 days, 12 of which are spent in transit between various supply chain steps. And this is just one tiny component that makes up the lifeline of the digital world. Components are as critical as the final device. But most of the components currently come from countries such as Taiwan, China, South Korea and the US. This is going to change soon, however.

Detecting deepfakes should not be the sole responsibility of platforms: Sam Gregory
World Economic Forum says AI-driven misinformation could interfere with electoral processes in various countries, including India. Sam Gregory, executive director of Witness, a global human rights organisation, which uses video and technology to expose human rights abuses and has worked on the threats of AI and deepfakes, spoke to ET about AI related challenges and strategies in elections. Edited excerpts: Can you quantify the risk of deepfakes in elections? We are entering a challenging moment in terms of deepfakes. This year, we have made technical progress that makes it easier and cheaper to make them. We are going to have an election year where synthetic media tools will be used for positive purposes such as voter outreach, and for negative ones.

View: Poor little Gemini, it tries, tries, tries
image generation tool Gemini because it had thrown up images of, among other things, Black vikings, Black and East Asian 1930s German soldiers, and an African-American founding father of America. As anyone familiar with the non-existence of Hindus buried in Christian cemeteries, men admitted in maternity wards of hospitals, or communists in Goldman Sachs, these images generated by Gemini have no bearing in real life. They are, in the truest sense, surreal, adj. strange, especially because of the combination of items that are never found together in reality. Quite like, say, Salvador Dali's 1944 painting, 'Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Waking', where two tigers are seen jumping out of a fish's mouth while a white elephant with incredibly long stilt-legs passes by in the background, all while a naked woman is lying back unbothered by everything happening around her. Tigers, fish, elephants and stretched-out women have yet to complain. But quite unlike Dali and other surrealists, Gemini and other LLMs, don't really think up these images themselves. They create from what they are told — prompted — by their human overlords and by dipping into their vast vats of training datasets, and then go beyond these two parameters. They're darzis, not designers. Yet.

Ivy League whisperers: Why high-end education consultants are in huge demand from Delhi to Dhanbad
students, dreaming of Harvard and Yale, with parents in tow, step into a rather unimpressive building nearby. They come from as far as Amritsar, Dhanbad and Delhi. They make their way to the sixth floor where an amiable-looking, grey-haired, bespectacled man waits for them in his three-room office. Viral Doshi, they believe, has the key to their favourite undergraduate destination—the Ivy League. The kids are often just 14 years old. When they are in Class IX, they come to Doshi, one of the most sought-after consultants for US college admissions in India, to entrust their next four years to him. These years will be spent in crafting a student life that will tick all the boxes in an application form to a top American college. Doshi’s four-year package costs anywhere between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 7 lakh. “Applying to universities is not a cookie-cutter process,” says Doshi. “Each application requires a lot of time and attention to detail as a kid’s career is at stake.” He starts by getting to know a student—their favourite subjects and interests. He puts them to a psychometric analysis to crosscheck their strengths and weaknesses. He then sits them down and advises on areas they should focus on and maps out a possible career path.

The friendship with Warren Buffett that led to her $1 billion donation
Becoming Warren Buffett.") Their personal friendship turned into a professional relationship by 1966, when Buffett was looking for companies to buy and Gottesman called him with an idea: What about buying a department store in Baltimore? As it happened, the department store Hochschild Kohn was run by Ruth’s extended family (her mother was a Kohn), and Sandy knew they were ready to sell. Buffett, Munger and Gottesman formed a company called Diversified Retailing and bought it. It soon became clear they had made a big mistake.

FIIs bought stocks worth Rs 1,500 crore in February. Will the buying momentum sustain?
foreign institutional investors (FIIs) poured in Rs 1,539 crore last month despite the US bond yields ruling high with the 10-year yield at around 4.25%. “FIIs may again turn sellers in some of the coming days. But they are unlikely to sell aggressively because their selling is not having any impact on the market, which is setting new record highs. FIIs will have to buy the same shares, which they are selling now, at higher prices when the situation turns favourable for FII buying. Therefore, even if they sell in the coming days, that will be subdued selling,” said Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.
