MoD greenlights $3.9 billion US defence deal, India to seal 31 MQ-9B Predator drone purchase by October
India is preparing to finalize a significant deal with the United States for 31 weaponized MQ-9B Predator drones. This agreement is expected to be signed next month. The defense ministry is currently finalizing a draft note for the finance ministry before seeking approval from the Prime Minister-led cabinet committee on security. A report from the Ministry of Defense’s contract negotiation committee has been accepted for this government-to-government deal, originally quoted by the US at $3.9 billion (over Rs 33,500 crore). Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the US for the Quad leaders’ summit hosted by President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 21. “The contract should be inked in mid-Oct. The costing, setting up of a MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul) facility here, performance-based logistics support and other such issues have been finalized after hard negotiations,” a source said to TOI.

Joe Biden tells journalist to 'be quiet' during heated exchange over Vladimir Putin’s war threat
Russia-Ukraine War: President Joe Biden issued a strong response to a journalist's question about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning on Ukraine during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House. Biden became visibly frustrated when a reporter from the British press asked him to comment on Putin’s statement that lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles could escalate the conflict into a direct US-Russia war, according to the New York Post. “Be quiet until I speak, okay? That’s what I say. Good idea?” Biden replied, showing irritation. The reporter continued, prompting Biden to respond, “You’ve got to be quiet. I’m going to make a statement here, okay?” After the brief introductory statements by Biden and Starmer, the reporter again asked about Putin. In response, Biden remarked, “I don’t think much about Vladimir Putin.”

Kamala Harris says she is different from Joe Biden because 'I offer a new generation of leadership'
Kamala Harris, who presents herself as the candidate of change as she runs for president against Republican Donald Trump, said Friday that she's different from President Joe Biden because she offers «a new generation of leadership.» In her first solo television interview since she became the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris also criticized the "hate and division that we see coming out of Donald Trump" and said she thinks people are «exhausted» by his style of leadership. She also said she's a gun owner and doesn't want to take away anyone's guns, but she believes a ban on assault-style weapons is necessary and consistent with the Second Amendment.

US locks in steep China tariff hikes, many to start September 27
Biden administration on Friday locked in steep tariff hikes on Chinese imports, including a 100% duty on electric vehicles, to strengthen protections for strategic domestic industries from China's state-driven excess production capacity. The U.S. Trade Representative's said that many of the tariffs, including a 100% duty on Chinese EVs, 50% on solar cells and 25% on steel, aluminum, EV batteries and key minerals, would go into effect on Sept. 27. The USTR determination, published on Friday but first reviewed by Reuters, showed a 50% duty on Chinese semiconductors, which now include two new categories — polysilicon used in solar panels and silicon wafers — are due to start in 2025.

US judge dismisses three counts in Trump election case in Georgia
Georgia judge on Thursday dismissed three of the counts in the indictment accusing former US president Donald Trump and co-defendants of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the southern state. Two of the three charges thrown out by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee involved Trump, and he now faces a total of eight felony counts in Georgia. McAfee declined, however, to quash the entire indictment, which accuses the Republican presidential candidate and his allies of racketeering and other offenses.

James Bond-worthy tech? Was Kamala Harris wearing “smart audio”-enabled earrings to communicate with her debate team
Kamala Harris has now been accused of donning James Bond-style gear during her latest appearance at the US Presidential Debate 2024, where she was simply outstanding in an open debate against her Republican adversary Donald Trump. It must be interesting to note that she gave Trump the taste of the same medicine that Joe Biden received during his Presidential Debate against Trump.
