Ashok Chavan joins BJP; Congress swings from 'coward' to 'come back' comment
Congress leader Ashok Chavan on Tuesday joined BJP here in the presence of Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. While calling him a «coward», the Congress leadership also requested him to reconsider his decision. Chavan's exit on the eve of the Rajya Sabha polls has forced the leadership to burn the midnight oil to prevent a potential split in the party. Chavan is likely to be BJP's Rajya Sabha candidate. However, BJP has not revealed its cards yet, with Fadnavis claiming that the decision would be taken by the leadership in New Delhi. «One of the senior most leaders in the state has joined us and because of his entry, our grand alliance has been strengthened,» said Fadnavis at a press conference.

Siddaramaiah himself to blame for funding inequality: Pralhad Joshi
Pralhad Joshi attempted to turn the tables on the Karnataka Congress regime on Tuesday, saying that if there was any inequality in funds distribution, CM Siddaramaiah himself was responsible for it. He was the chief minister back in 2016 when the Finance Commission assessed Karnataka, Joshi said, and it was his responsibility to present the state’s demands accurately. Slamming the Congress, Joshi added that the leaders were attacking the Centre with false allegations of inequality in funds devolution merely to cover up their own infighting. “[Chief minister] Siddaramaiah is an expert in lying…they are doing this drama in the background of the Lok Sabha elections to divert attention from the infighting between him and DK Shivakumar,” the MP from Dharwad said. Lok Sabha polls are months away and the Congress has been trying to corner the ruling BJP over fiscal inequality towards the states, with protests in the national capital as well as social media campaigns.

The political hot potatoes on which urban India disagrees with the BJP
first part of this series, published on Monday, showed that support for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had increased substantially in the latest round of the YouGov-Mint-CPR Millennial Survey, with nearly 47% of the respondents favouring the party. Limited trust in the Opposition alliance and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal appeal have played a major role in this surge. However, this doesn't mean there is support for the BJP’s position on all key issues related to its 2024 election campaign.

Qatar releases 8 Navy veterans awarded death; 7 return to India
India's quiet multifaceted diplomatic efforts through formal channels and informal talks, besides a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Emir of Qatar, helped New Delhi secure the release of eight Navy veterans who were sentenced to death last year. Achieving the release of the eight Indians, accused of spying for Israel, was a key item on the agenda of the Ministry of External Affairs since last year. The concerned division in the ministry and the Indian embassy in Qatar had worked quiet channels to gain the reprieve, ET has learnt. The presence of veteran Gulf hand as India's ambassador to Qatar — Vipul — helped New Delhi leverage several channels to successfully secure the objective, according to observers. Vipul served as the head of MEA's Gulf division before heading to Doha last year. Simultaneously, the National Security Council Secretariat led by NSA Ajit Doval worked on its channel of contacts in Doha. The matter was handled deftly, and secrecy was maintained till the veterans returned.

India’s rival is Vietnam in the game of attracting global manufacturers
If India wants to build a robust computer and electronics manufacturing industry, it needs to shift focus, fast. Instead of concentrating on its domestic market, it should become regionally competitive and export-driven. That would mean recognizing that Vietnam, not China, is its biggest rival.

Rahul writes to PM over 'plight' of MGNREGS workers in WB, urges Centre to release funds
Rahul Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the «devastating plight» of MGNREGS workers in West Bengal and urged his government to facilitate the release of central funds to the state for clearing their pending wages. In his letter to Modi, Gandhi said that during his recent visit to West Bengal as part of the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra, a delegation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) workers from the Paschim Banga Khet Mazdoor Samity apprised him of the issues faced by them. Flagging the «devastating plight» of MGNREGS workers in West Bengal and their relentless fight for justice, he said, «Lakhs of our brothers and sisters have been denied work and wages under MGNREGS due to the stoppage of central funds to West Bengal since March, 2022.» «I was informed that many workers have not been paid for work completed in 2021 due to shortfall in funds,» the former Congress chief said in his letter to Modi dated February 10.

INDIA bloc strong despite Nitish Kumar's exit, seat sharing to be finalised soon, says Jairam Ramesh
Jairam Ramesh on Monday said the opposition INDIA bloc is strong and all constituents will soon finalise seat sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Addressing a press conference in Barpali village in Chhattisgarh's Korba district, he said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) as well as the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) quitting the Congress-led bloc will not have any impact. "INDIA alliance is strong. Nitish ji has done volte-face and RLD is trying to do the same. There were 28 parties in the alliance and two have left. However, discussion is underway with AAP, DMK, NCP, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Mamta Banerjee ji over seat sharing (for Lok Sabha polls)," he said. «We are strong and soon seat sharing in different states will be given a final touch,» he added. Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramesh said the former spoke about 'one nation, one tax' and 'one nation, one election' but in reality it has become about «one nation, one company» in the last 10 years (of NDA rule).
