Rajya Sabha chairperson to disallow the tabling of a parliamentary committee report which contains comments on the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill while noting that it was never referred to the panel. Citing rules guiding the two Houses, he said in his letter to the chairs that parliamentary standing committees are explicitly prohibited from examining any bills that have not been referred to them by either the Rajya Sabha chairperson or the Lok Sabha speaker after their introduction. «It is imperative to note that the said Digital Personal Data Protection Bill had neither been introduced before either of the Houses of Parliament till date nor was it referred to the Standing Committee by the chairman of the Rajya Sabha or the speaker, as the case may be, for examination,» Brittas said. The Kerala MP is a member of the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology headed by Shiv Sena MP Prataprao Jadhav. Brittas added, «It is evident that the Report of the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, said to be adopted on July 26, 2023, is void ab initio (having no legal sanctity) and is ultra vires of the powers of the Standing Committee conferred by the rules.»

New Delhi: Union minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said that the UPSC has allowed candidates who had opted for Imphal as a centre for exam, to change and appear in any of the centres, viz., Aizawl, Delhi, Dispur, Jorhat, Kohima, Kolkata and Shillong. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister informed that this option was provided in the the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2023 (held on 28 May 2023) and in the recruitment tests for accounts officer/ enforcement officer and assistant provident fund commissioner (APFC) in the employees provident fund organisation (EPFO) (held on 2 July 2023).

Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh to appear before it in response to summons issued to them in a criminal defamation case. The court of chief metropolitan magistrate SJ Panchal rejected the AAP leaders' exemption applications and kept the matter for August 11. Kejriwal and Singh are facing a criminal defamation case filed by Gujarat University (GU) over their «sarcastic» and «derogatory» remarks over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational degree. Through their lawyer, the two leaders assured the court that they will remain present during the next date of hearing provided there do not arise circumstances beyond their control. If they face any such circumstances that prevent them from appearing, then there are judgments that allow counsels to record a plea, their lawyer told the court. The respondents sought exemption on various grounds and said they have challenged the summons in a sessions court and the matter is likely to come up for hearing on August 5. GU strongly opposed the exemption applications, calling them a tactic to delay the proceedings. It appealed to the court to issue a warrant against them.
