Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Monday said Shiv Sena leader Ravindra Waikar should be stopped from taking oath as the Lok Sabha member, amid a controversy after he won the Mumbai North West seat by a thin margin of 48 votes. The Vanrai police in Mumbai have registered a case against Waikar's brother-in-law for allegedly using a mobile phone at a counting centre in Goregaon (which is part of Waikar's constituency) on June 4, when results of the general elections were announced. Speaking to reporters here, Raut said, «Waikar's electoral victory is under suspicion, and a complaint has already been filed at the Vanrai police station in Mumbai. Due to the ongoing controversy surrounding the poll outcome, Waikar should be prevented from taking oath as a member of the Lok Sabha.»

These decisions cannot be taken by me,» Birla said. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday said all partners of the opposition INDIA bloc will try to ensure support for the ruling ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP) if it fields a candidate for the Lok Sabha speaker's election. Talking to reporters here, Raut claimed the Lok Sabha speaker's election will be crucial and if the BJP gets the post, it will break the government-supporting parties like the TDP, JD(U) and the political outfits of Chirag Paswan and Jayant Chaudhary. «We have the experience that BJP betrays the people who support it,» Raut claimed. «I hear the TDP wants to field its candidate. If that happens, INDIA bloc partners will discuss the issue and will try to ensure that all the INDIA alliance partners extend support to the TDP,» he said.

Mansukh Mandaviya, who served as the union health minister at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, was on Monday appointed as India's new sports minister, replacing Anurag Thakur in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet. AAP on Sunday said the Delhi Police has seized the DVR of CCTV cameras installed inside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence in connection with its probe into the "assault" on Swati Maliwal and accused the cops of planting stories to tarnish the party's image ahead of the elections. There was no immediate reaction from the Delhi Police. Maliwal, an AAP Rajya Sabha member, has alleged that Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar assaulted her on May 13 when she had gone to the chief minister's residence to meet him. AAP has rubbished her allegations and claimed that Maliwal is acting at the behest of the BJP to frame Kejriwal. Kumar was arrested on Saturday and produced in a court, which remanded him in five-day police custody.

Arvind Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar, has been sent to five days in police custody following allegations of assaulting AAP Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal. The Delhi Police arrested Kumar on Saturday, and his anticipatory bail plea was subsequently declared “infructuous” by a Delhi court. The police allege that Kumar, Kejriwal’s personal assistant, assaulted Maliwal at the CM's residence on the morning of May 13. Kumar was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal, who granted the police’s request for custody. The police, through their counsel, sought seven days of custody to question Kumar about the assault. They argued that Kumar did not provide his mobile phone password to the investigating agency and claimed that his phone had been formatted in Mumbai due to a malfunction. Police stated, “Before being formatted, the data of a mobile phone has to be cloned, and Kumar was required to be taken to Mumbai for retrieving the data.” They added that his presence was needed when his mobile phone is opened by an expert.

BJP alleged on Friday that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should be held directly responsible for the reported attack on AAP Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal and questioned his silence on the issue. The party said instead of taking action against his aide and accused Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal is moving around with him. In an interaction with the media, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the alleged attack on Maliwal as “unbelievable and unacceptable” and wondered how the chief minister could be expected to protect the women of Delhi if his own MP who was also the Delhi Commission for Women chief. “Kejriwal has not spoken a single word till today. No comparison can be made between this case and other assaults on women. It took place in the chief minister’s own house, when the chief minister was present and by a man who is considered the right hand of the chief minister. The Delhi Commission for Women chairperson was attacked. The Delhi CM does not have the confidence to make a statement. He should apologise,” Sitharaman said.

However, the main contest is between Sajad Lone of People's Conference and Omar Abdullah of National Conference. The contest has become interesting with the entry of Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) of Sheikh Abdul Rashid, alias Engineer Rashid. The two-time legislator is contesting from Tihar jail. AIP's campaign rallies are receiving huge response across north Kashmir. It appears that People's Democratic Party candidate Fayaz Mir, who is a former Rajya Sabha member, may have already lost the third spot in the contest. BJP has not fielded any candidate in the three Lok Sabha seats of Kashmir, but is actively canvassing for some parties without directly naming them. Piyush Goyal, contesting a Lok Sabha election for the first time, asserted on Wednesday that he will surely win — but almost entirely because of the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that this election will determine the fate of India. «I recognise that we are all subsumed under Mr Modi's performance… It is gradually dawning on people that this is Modi's election,» Goyal told PTI during a road show — a slow crawling journey atop a decked up pickup truck that wound its way through a ward of Borivali in the Mumbai North constituency. Goyal, a Rajya Sabha member and a veteran manager of many an election campaign, including that of Lal Krishna Advani in 1989, replaced incumbent Gopal Shetty as BJP's candidate for the constituency. The elections are due on May 20. Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal on Monday alleged that she was assaulted by the personal assistant of DelhiCM Arvind Kejriwal at his official residence following a request by Kejriwal that she quit from the Upper House to pave the way for the party's lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Maliwal, former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, went to the Civil Lines police station and alleged that a close aide of Kejriwal had assaulted her on the chief minister's directions at his official residence. Police said a formal complaint had not yet been received.

NCP leader Praful Patel on Friday took oath as member of the Upper House of Parliament in presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Patel was declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on February 21. His fresh term as Rajya Sabha member began in April this year. «An immense honor to take the oath as a Rajya Sabha MP today, in the esteemed presence of the honorable Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji,» Patel said in a post on X. The NCP leader described the oath-taking ceremony as a «moment filled with solemnity and commitment to serve the nation.»

The court also framed charges against AMR Iron and Steel, Asera Banka Power and Abhishek Jayaswal under Section 3 and 4 of PMLA. The court, however, discharged 15 of the total 21 co-accused in the case, finding no evidence to charge them. Of the 15 discharged, seven are Kolkata-based alleged shell companies controlled by a chartered accountant through six of his employees who were made directors in the alleged shell companies.
