Olympics 2024: After drawing blank in Rio and Tokyo, shooting fraternity cautiously happy post Paris
shooting contingent's biggest-ever medal haul at the Olympics here, after drawing a blank in the previous two editions in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, definitely calls for celebration but the fraternity is treading cautiously with an eye already on the 2028 Los Angeles Games. All of India's medal at the Paris Olympics have come via shooting thus far and there is a slight possibility of increasing the medal count to four by the time the competition ends on Monday. The squad has also overcome the mental barrier that prevented Manu Bhaker and Co from excelling on the biggest stage. The highlight of the campaign has been Manu's two medals, the second one shared with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m pistol mixed team.

Deepika Kumari crumbed under pressure once again, suffering a 4-6 loss to Korea's Suhyeon Nam in the women's individual event quarterfinals to bring down curtains on India's campaign at the Paris Olympics here on Saturday. Deepika had qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Germany's Michelle Kroppen 6-4 earlier in the day. Deepika had defeated the 19-year-old Nam in straight sets in the semifinal at the Shanghai World Cup in April en route winning a silver medal, but on Saturday the Indian stalwart could not repeat that performance. The two archers were tied 4-4 after four sets but Nam was rewarded for her consistency as she claimed the fifth set to enter the semifinals.

A $1 trillion time bomb is ticking in America's housing market
Years ahead of the financial crisis, David Burt saw trouble brewing in subprime mortgages and started betting on a crisis, winning himself a cameo in The Big Short by Michael Lewis in addition to lots of money. Now Burt runs DeltaTerra Capital, a research firm he founded to warn investors about the next housing crisis. This one will be caused by climate change. In a webinar with journalists last month, Burt argued that US homeowners’ wildfire and flood risks are underinsured by $28.7 billion a year. As a result, more than 17 million homes, representing nearly 19% of total US home value, are at risk of suffering what could total $1.2 trillion in value destruction.

'New World' Alert
Nasa was preparing for the Apollo mission, some of the training of the astronauts took place on a Navajo reservation. One day, a Navajo elder and his son were herding sheep and came across the space crew. The old man, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question that his son translated: 'What are these guys in the big suits doing?' A member of the crew said they were practising for their trip to the moon. The old man got all excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts. Recognising a promotional opportunity, the Nasa folks found a tape recorder. After the old man recorded his message, they asked his son to translate it. He refused. The Nasa PR people brought the tape to the reservation, where the rest of the tribe listened and laughed, but refused to translate the elder's message.
