From chapatis to cold coffee, protein is showing up everywhere
FMCG) companies are now embedding protein into everyday items—from burgers and coffees to staples like chapatis—to drive frequency and mainstream adoption.“We see protein as a long-term shift rather than a niche trend, especially as consumers become more aware of nutritional gaps in everyday diets. However, for this to truly scale in India, it has to be accessible,” said Enakshi Dasgupta, head of new product development, iD Fresh Food.

Depresso! Cafés go through the grinder
Starbucks, Barista, Chaayos and Third Wave Coffee are among café chains facing the brunt of a slowdown in discretionary consumer spending. The impact is more severe for these retailers as they opened hundreds of new stores last fiscal year even as losses widened. To be sure, smaller chains such as Tim Hortons and Blue Tokai have bucked the trend.

Canadian woman claims she was fired for exposing HR for hiring only Indians, gets schooled
Indian diaspora overseas has often been accused of tampering with recruitment policies to favour Indian candidates. Recently, a Canadian women invited controversy when she claimed that she was dismissed from her job at a multinational coffee chain when she complained that desi hiring managers often showed bias towards Indian immigrants. Taking to X, she alleged that Indian managers at Tim Hortons mainly hire people from the Indian community, which has led to feelings of exclusion and discrimination among employees from various backgrounds. The woman claimed she was fired after bringing these issues to the attention of management. This situation has emerged amid ongoing discussions about immigration to Canada, particularly as the Trudeau government has tightened regulations in response to a significant increase in newcomers. Her allegations have ignited considerable debate on social media, prompting a wide range of reactions from users. While some have shown sympathy for her plight, emphasizing the necessity for individuals to express their concerns regarding workplace discrimination, others have reacted with skepticism about her claims.

12 Flags Group takes a sip of Blue Tokai
Flags Group, the India-focused consumer fund set up by Rakesh Kapoor, former global CEO of Reckitt Benckiser, has struck its first deal in India by investing an undisclosed amount in speciality coffee chain Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters. Kapoor confirmed the deal to ET. He, however, declined to give further details on the investment. A Blue Tokai spokesperson declined to comment. The investment by 12 Flags comes at a time when cafe chains in India are growing faster than quick service restaurants (QSRs), fuelled by younger set of consumers, aspirational demand, and menu innovation. In addition to new-age speciality coffee chains such as Blue Tokai, Third Wave and Slay, there are legacy brands such as Tata Starbucks, Costa Coffee and Barista, as well as relatively newer global entrants to India like British chain Pret a Manger and Canada's Tim Hortons, all of which are fuelling demand for cafes.

Quebec Tim Hortons franchisees sue brand owner for almost $19M
Several Quebec Tim Hortons franchisees are taking the brand’s owner to court, blaming what they describe as unreasonable constraints in the company’s licensing agreements for lower-than-expected profits. In a lawsuit filed in Quebec Superior Court on Thursday, 16 companies with Tim Hortons franchise licences allege the TDL Group Corp.’s contracts “place it in a position of absolute dominance” over their combined 44 restaurants.“Through these Tim Hortons licence agreements … TDL controls every essential lever involved in the running of a restaurant,” from deals with suppliers to equipment,” the plaintiffs allege in their application.TDL also sets prices for both menu items and the ingredients restaurants need to make them, the lawsuit contends.Yet TDL’s policy of fixing prices didn’t adapt to the market, the franchisees assert. They argue the franchisor’s rules leave them “no room for maneuver” and impose costs they are unable to match in sales.

How far can you go with EVs in Canada? A closer look at range, battery life
electric vehicle. While “range anxiety” used to be a factor in purchasing an electric vehicle years ago given their novelty and limited charging infrastructure, times have changed and consumers have less to worry about how far their EV can go, experts told Global News.“Range has improved,” said Mark Marmer, the owner and founder of energy consultant Signature Electric. “Now most cars and trucks have at least about a 300- to 350-kilometre range, which is a reasonably comfortable thing.”That’s compared with eight to 10 years ago, when EVs only had a range of 150 to 200 kilometres, Marmer said.
