PM Modi & Chinese President Xi Jinping meet for first formal talks in five years as ties recover from 2020 military clash
Xi Jinping held their first formal talks in five years on Wednesday, signalling that ties between the Asian giants damaged by a deadly military clash in 2020 had begun to recover. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, the Indian government and Chinese state media said, two days after New Delhi announced that it had reached a deal with Beijing to resolve the four-year military stand-off on their disputed Himalayan frontier. Relations between the world's two most populous nations — both nuclear powers — have been strained since a clash between their troops on the largely undemarcated frontier in the western Himalayas of Ladakh left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead in 2020.

Easing Arunachal positions part of pact: Army chief
Army chief said that trust has to be restored on the China border and status quo of April 2020 needs to be achieved for normal management of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), even as details have emerged that the patrolling agreement with Beijing will include easing up of positions in Arunachal Pradesh that had emerged as tension flashpoints over the past four years. General Upendra Dwivedi indicated that several steps are required before disengagement, de-escalation and normal management of the border can be achieved. «We are trying to restore trust. How will the trust get restored? It will get restored once we are able to see each other and we are able to convince each other that look 'the buffer zones which are there, which have been created… we are not creeping into buffer zones'… and both have to reassure each other,» he said.

Ruchir Modi seeks justice over Rs 620 crore dividends in Delhi HC
Ruchir Modi, son of former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi, has filed a plea in the Delhi High Court seeking distribution of the dividends of Rs 620.83 crore, received by the K.K. Modi Family Trust companies since 2020, among the four family branches — Lalit Modi, Bina Modi, Samir Modi and Charu Modi. Justice Subramonium Prasad has given two weeks to Bina and her daughter Charu Modi to respond to the Ruchir's application. The case will be next heard on November 19. Ruchir in his fresh plea has alleged that several trust companies including Godfrey Phillips India (GPIL), IPM India Wholesale Trading and Indofil Industries have announced and distributed dividends the tune of Rs 620.83 crore to the upstream Trust companies since 2020, but he and his family branch had been kept «completely in the dark» and his family branch is entitled to a 25% share.

Harris, Trump pick up the pace two weeks to Election Day
Kamala Harris and her Republican rival, Donald Trump, delivered radically different messages on the U.S. campaign trail on Monday as they sought to win over undecided voters in the two weeks before Election Day. Vice President Harris, campaigning alongside former Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney in the three midwestern battleground states, argued that Trump, the former president, was a threat to democracy. As the election draws closer, Harris has been sharpening her attacks on Trump's fitness for office, often calling him «unstable» or «unhinged» and questioning his temperament.

China agrees to India's patrolling rights in Depsang, next step de-escalation
Details of the patrolling agreement are yet to be shared but disengagement of troops at both Depsang, where Chinese soldiers had blocked access to patrolling points by occupying the 'Y Junction', and Demchock, where tents had been erected Indian side of LAC, was vital to move to the next step of de-escalation. A larger de-escalation- in which forward deployed troops inducted in thousands since tensions broke out in 2020 will be moved back to their peacetime locations — has been the focus of talks from the Indian side.

India, China reach patrolling agreement in Ladakh, boosting prospects for Modi-Xi meeting at BRICS Summit
BRICS summit, the Modi government has said that India and China have reached an agreement to resume patrolling in eastern Ladakh. The development has brightened chances of a meeting between PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on the sidelines of the summit. «Over the last several weeks, Indian and Chinese diplomatic and military negotiators have been in close contact with each other in a variety of forums. As a result of the discussions that have taken place over the last several weeks, an agreement has been arrived at on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in the India-China border area and this is leading to disengagement and eventually a resolution of the issues that had arisen in these areas in 2020,» foreign secretary Vikram Misri said at a media briefing. Indian and Chinese soldiers will be able to resume patrolling in the way they had been doing before the border face-off in May 2020, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said at a media event. He said LAC breakthrough is a good development that happened due to «patient and persevering diplomacy».
