Money laundering suspected: More payment banks under scanner
payment banks may face regulatory action as the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has detected about 50,000 accounts without know-your-customer (KYC) verification and potentially engaged in suspicious transactions and money laundering activities. About 30,000 of these are with payments banks other than Paytm Payments Bank and details have already been given to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is looking into these and has sought further information, said people with knowledge of the matter. The banking regulator didn’t respond to queries. The lapses by such banks include nonreporting of suspicious transactions, not maintaining details of beneficial owners and registration of multiple users using a single income tax permanent account number (PAN).

Yami Gautam opens up on controversy surrounding upcoming film 'Article 370' : 'No point in justifying'
Yami Gautam says there is no point in justifying the intent of her film 'Article 370' to people who already have a preconceived notion about it being a propaganda film. Gautam headlines the upcoming political drama, which marks her husband, filmmaker Aditya Dhar's production debut via B62 Studios. Dhar is the director of 2019 film «Uri: The Surgical Strike». The release of 'Article 370' comes ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, the film will hit the screens on February 23. «If someone is calling it names… like 'propaganda', 'jingoism', and 'chest-thumping'… Any section that goes into theatres already thinking or carrying a preconceived notion that this is what it's about, you'll never be able to feel or enjoy the film. There is no point justifying the film to them. I don't think the audience thinks about these things. This film is for the majority of the audience and we make films for the audience,» Gautam toldPTI in an interview.

Mamata Banerjee demands stringent action by the Centre over Chopra incident
Mamata Banerjee slammed Border Security Force (BSF) and held them responsible for the death of four children who died in Uttar Dinajpur district’s Chopra on Thursday. She demanded stringent action by the Centre on the issue. “BSF's responsibility is to guard the borders. When four innocent children died in Chopra, did their lives have any value? Our delegation met the Governor today. I want punishment of those BSF officers, who are responsible for the death of these innocent children,” Banerjee demanded at the floor of the assembly on Thursday. “The Central government must take stringent action,” she said adding, “I know what the BSF is doing. One of the MLAs in Murshidabad complained to me that BSF dragged an Imam out of a mosque in his constituency and assaulted him.”

SC allows withdrawal of pleas challenging validity of UAPA provisions
Supreme Court withdrew their pleas on Thursday, saying they have decided to move appropriate forums. A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, which had on Wednesday said it will not allow «proxy litigation» to challenge the vires of the anti-terror law UAPA, allowed as many as eight petitions to be withdrawn, after the petitioners' counsels said they would like to approach the jurisdictional high courts for relief. The bench had asked the counsel for petitioners to seek instruction by Thursday whether they want to approach the high court to quash the FIR in UAPA cases or they want to challenge the vires of the law in the top court. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for three civil society members, including a journalist, who were booked under the anti-terror law by Tripura Police in 2021 over their social media posts on riots in the state, said he has received instructions from his clients to withdraw the petitions.

BSNL's employees union urges government action to utilize Vi's 4G network
