Global South seeks democratic, diversified re-globalisation, says Jaishankar at B20 Summit
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday made a strong pitch for a «more diversified and more democratic» re-globalisation, saying the Global South can no longer be at the mercy of a few suppliers. Addressing the B20 Summit organised by the CII in New Delhi, he said the Global South was largely reduced to being a consumer rather than being a producer and could not reap the full benefits of economic change. «They (Global South) not only did not reap the full benefits of economic change, but often ended up saddled with unviable debts emanating from opaque initiatives.

RBI, Centre have reined in inflation; weather plays spoilsport: Experts
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) — increasing repo rates by 250 bps since last year, incremental cash reserve ratio — and the Central government's export controls have ensured that inflation is relatively under control, opined economists. India's central bank, the RBI, acts to control inflation through its monetary policies while the government does that through governance, infrastructure development that brings down the transaction costs and other ways, they added. «The RBI views inflation largely as a monetary phenomenon. Whether the inflation is due to supply or demand side, and whether it is driven by core or non-core components, the RBI believes that monetary policy intervention is required if the inflation rate breaches the tolerance zone,» Sujan Hajra, Chief Economist & Executive Director, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers, told IANS. As a result, the RBI bases monetary policy on headline retail inflation (changes in cost of commodities, goods, services) rather than core retail inflation (changes in cost of services and goods excluding food, energy sectors). According to Hajra, the RBI with its mandate for growth support, strikes a balance between inflation management and growth promotion. «Consequently, the RBI may maintain an accommodative monetary policy stance to encourage growth even if the central bank is concerned about the current inflationary environment.

Coal Ministry plans pump storage projects on closed mines for hydro energy
Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries are planning to set up pump storage projects (PSP) on huge tracts of decoaled (closed mines) lands at their disposal. According to highly placed sources, the plan to set up such projects in the first phase will be finalised in a month's time, as the central government is quite bullish over such projects. Part of the coal ministry's ambitious plans is to diversify towards alternate sources of energy and through these pump storage projects, it plans to utilise solar energy to develop hydro projects. The power ministry earlier this year had come out with guidelines for PSP initiative and the coal ministry plans to develop such projects based on them, sources informed further. Under it, the CIL and its subsidiaries will use their closed mines, which have water stored in them, to lift it through solar energy. It will set up reservoirs over such closed mines where the lifted water will be stored. During night time, it will use the water lifted through solar energy to generate hydro energy.

Jerome Powell could prompt investors to continue booking profits. The week ahead is also eventful for Dalal Street investors from a corporate standpoint.Mukesh Ambani the Chairman of Reliance Industries will address the shareholders at the company’s 46th annual general meeting on Monday, which will be closely tracked by investors. The next big event for the market is the Supreme Court’s hearing on Tuesday in the Adani-Hindenburg case. Volatility is expected to be high in the market, according to experts, given weak global sentiment and domestic events. “Equity markets are expected to remain volatile due to weakness in the external environment,” said Hemant Kanawala, senior EVP and head — equity, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Co. While corporate earnings of Indian companies are showing strong growth, valuations aren’t cheap, and there is limited room for them to expand, Kanawala said, adding that investors are likely to get returns in line with earnings growth till the end of the year.RIL AGMIn the last few years, some of the big bang announcements from Ambani have usually come at the AGM.

Cuemath has laid off 100 more employees amid a challenging macroeconomic environment for edtech companies, the media reported on Saturday.Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India) backs the startup. «Unfortunately, our revenue and cost trajectories are still divergent from expectations, and our problems are compounded by the bad macro situation around capital availability, particularly for edtech,» Cuemath's Founder and CEO, Manan Khurma, told employees in an email dated August 25, which is seen by Moneycontrol. «This means that we will have to move to a leaner team structure, in which some roles will get redundant. That exercise is being carried out today,» he added. In May, the company had laid off about 100 employees to improve efficiencies amid a worsening global landscape for K-12 edtech. «Post the May8 exits, I had said that hopefully the company will not need to take a similar action again.

SC agrees to hear plea of NGO challenging reduction of age of consent
Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea by an NGO against any reduction in the age of consent, saying it jeopardises the interest of a large number of child victims of sexual abuse, especially girls. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra issued notice to the Centre and tagged the plea of 'Bachpan Bachao Andolan' with a pending petition filed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The NCPCR had challenged last year's order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which said that a minor Muslim girl can marry a person of her choice. The apex court on Friday sought the Centre's response on the issue. The plea of NGO, besides seeking a slew of directions and guidelines, has also sought a directive to the courts to refrain from making observations regarding the minor victim's casual relationship and promiscuous attitude while dealing with the criminal proceedings under the POCSO Act.
