Muzaffarnagar Police have taken action against a teacher accused of making communal statements and instructing her students to slap a fellow Muslim classmate who had failed to complete his homework in a recent incident that has aroused indignation across many parts of society. The scandal has received censure from political parties and important figures, sparking a broader debate about the region's education and communal peace.
The teacher in question, identified as Trapti Tyagi, was formally charged one day after a video surfaced, revealing her involvement in the incident that occurred at Neha Public School in Khubbapur village.
The video not only captured the teacher instructing students to physically assault a Class 2 student but also recorded her making inflammatory communal remarks.
The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the main body protecting children's rights, demanded immediate action against the accused instructor after seeing the video.
The police have charged Tyagi under IPC sections 323 and 504, both of which are non-cognizable offenses, based on the boy's family's complaint. These charges are bailable and do not result in immediate arrest; instead, a warrant is required.
Tyagi has alleged in her defense that the video was altered with in order to raise tensions and that it was recorded by one of the boy's uncles.
She admitted her wrongdoing in orchestrating the student's slap but asserted that her physical limitations, due to a disability, compelled her to resort to such measures as she couldn't physically reach the student to address the matter.
