Mint Quick Edit | US race: Harris's campaign has pivoted to the centre
If the absence of a concrete plan of economic action was rendering the US Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Kamala Harris vulnerable to political criticism, she has now sought to correct that. At a poll rally, Harris announced new ideas that include enhancing expenditure deductions for startups, providing greater child tax credits, offering the middle class tax cuts and giving first-time homebuyers down-payment assistance.

Did Tim Walz commit a $250 million Covid fraud? He has been subpoenaed for that
Tim Walz has always been focused on creating universal meal schemes for school children. It is being alleged that the taxpayers dime was instead funneled to fund the purchase of luxury vehicles and real-estate in different parts of the world under the garb of a fraudulent Minneapolis-based NGO named 'Feeding Our Future.' Republican U.S. Representative from North Carolina Virginia Foxx, chair of the committee, has sent out subpoenas to Kamala Harris' running mate and Minnesota Education Commissioner Willie Jett for what is being touted as the 'biggest COVID-related scam in the United States.

This is how Kamala Harris can beat Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential debate
Harris received advice from former Obama advisor David Axelrod on what he thinks will be the secret to beating out former President Donald Trump in their upcoming ABC News presidential debate on September 10. On Tuesday's episode of CNN's OutFront program, Axelrod told Erin Burnett that Harris' best course of action would be to jiu-jitsu Trump. Axelrod advised Democratic candidate Harris that the best strategy would be to use his negative energy against him. Harris is running against a Republican. He believes that the majority of Americans are not inclined to support Donald Trump. Trump doesn't have a lot of popularity. In a video that Raw Story posted online, Axelrod went on to remark that a lot of it has to do with his behaviour. Thus, he would let him act out. He would just converse with the nation, and he would be prepared with a few lighthearted asides and jabs, but his main audience would be the people in the nation who are interested in learning more about Kamala Harris and her leadership because they are trying to find a substitute for Donald Trump. Sebi employees protest outside HQ, seek boss Madhabi Puri Buch's resignation
Sebi employees on Thursday gathered around the headquarters of the markets regulator in Mumbai and staged a silent protest demanding the withdrawal of Wednesday's statement blaming «external forces» for the protest and also sought the resignation of their boss Madhabi Puri Buch. After The Economic Times reported that Sebi officials made an unprecedented complaint to the finance ministry last month and accused the top leadership of fostering a toxic work culture, the regulator issued a press release on Wednesday evening saying that HRA (house rent allowance) issues of staff are being misguided by external elements to target credibility of Sebi and its leadership.

Deposits won’t grow faster; it is time for credit growth to slow down
₹4 trillion, the RBI conducted repo auctions to inject system liquidity. Irrespective of external flows or government spending, deposit accretion levels are largely a consequence of the monetary policy stance and resultant liquidity actions. What is in banks’ control, however, is the composition of deposits between Casa (current account and savings account) deposits, retail term deposits and bulk deposits.

Chinese spy and top aide of New York mayor got a Ferrari, salted ducks, and a Honolulu apartment as a gift from the government
New York secretly assisted the Chinese government in gaining access to an official call regarding COVID-19 while living a lavish lifestyle as an undercover agent for Beijing. Linda Sun worked her way up to become the governor's deputy chief of staff over a roughly 14-year tenure. Federal prosecutors, however, claim that the 41-year-old secretly shared internal documents with Beijing and prevented Taiwanese diplomats from contacting the state government to help Chinese officials. China is said to have lavished Ms. Sun and her husband, Christopher Hu, with millions of dollars in kickbacks in exchange, enabling them to purchase a $4.1 million (£3.1 million) New York home and other benefits like personalized home delivery of salted duck. Pawar pitches for West Bengal-like anti-rape bill in Maharashtra
Sharad Pawar on Wednesday made a pitch for replicating in Maharashtra the bill passed by West Bengal assembly that seeks capital punishment for rape convicts. Pawar also took a swipe at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over his reported remark that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj never looted Surat, and said nobody should present wrong history to people. The West Bengal assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill, 2024, the state anti-rape bill which seeks capital punishment for rape convicts if their actions result in the victim's death or leave her in a vegetative state. It was passed nearly a month after the alleged rape and murder of a post graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Anti-rape protests aren’t pointless if they alter the behaviour of perpetrators
In recent days, the streets of Calcutta and Kerala have witnessed many protests against violence aimed at women. Will these protests change the attitudes of individuals or society at large towards women? Violence against women is a very complex behavioural issue. The incident that happened in the Kolkata hospital and the incidents that occurred in the Malayalam film industry represent two ends of the problem spectrum.
