Delhi breathes easier as AQI improves slightly
The city's air quality was last recorded in the 'poor' category on October 29 with an AQI of 268, according to the CPCB. Experts attribute the improvement to dry northwesterly winds and ample sunlight, which have helped disperse pollutants. However, the city's air quality remains far from ideal as an AQI between 201 and 300 is still considered harmful to sensitive groups.

Magic price tags no longer cast a spell on shoppers
daily essentials and grocery products with price tags of ₹5 and in many cases ₹10, often called popular or magic price points, an indication of consumers upgrading their shopping basket or opting for larger packs that offer them more grammage for every rupee spent. In several categories including noodles, chocolates, detergents, toothpaste, soaps and dishwash, contribution especially of ₹5 packs has fallen over the past four years while it has stagnated in biscuits, according to latest data by Kantar. Under ₹2 shampoo, however, is an exception, and saw its share expanding as people buy sachets in bulk especially in rural markets. «We are witnessing the emergence of ₹15 to ₹25 price points, reflecting a broader trend of upgradation across fast moving consumer goods categories. Consumers across all segments are increasingly looking for value across various price points, suggesting a shift towards higher grammage and premium options even during inflationary times,» said Neeraj Khatri, chief executive, Wipro Consumer Care.

Growth seen at 6.1-6.8% for FY25 on 7-quarter Q2 low
Citing risk to the economic outlook and the likelihood of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India in February, they now predict gross domestic product (GDP) to grow 6.1-6.8% in the year ending March 31, lower than the central bank's forecast of 7.2%. GDP growth was the slowest in seven quarters at 5.4% in July-September, hurt by low consumption and weak investment demand. CareEdge Ratings lowered its FY25 GDP forecast to 6.5%, from 7%. «Urban consumption is seeing moderation after the sharp spurt, post-Covid,» said Rajani Sinha, its chief economist.

Politics of day indulges in cherry-picking facts: Jaishankar on Tipu Sultan
Tipu Sultan's case, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said here. He claimed a «particular narrative» about the former ruler of Mysore has been advanced over the years. In his address at the launch of the book 'Tipu Sultan: The Saga of Mysore Interregnum 1761-1799' on Saturday, Jaishankar said there are some basic questions that «confront us all» today as to how much of «our past has been airbrushed», how awkward issues have been «glossed over» and how «facts are tailored for regime convenience». The book has been written by historian Vikram Sampath.

Sambhal mosque: ASI files response in court, seeks control, management of Mughal-era structure
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has submitted its response in a court — which had allowed a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid here — seeking control and management of the Mughal-era mosque as it is a protected heritage structure. Representing the ASI, lawyer Vishnu Sharma said the agency submitted its counterargument in the court on Friday, stating that it faced resistance from the mosque's management committee and locals in conducting surveys of the site. He said the ASI also highlighted an incident from January 19, 2018, when an FIR was filed against the mosque's management committee for installing steel railings on the mosque's steps without proper authorisation. The mosque, notified as an ASI-protected monument in 1920, is under the purview of the agency and as such, public access to the structure should be permitted, provided it adheres to ASI regulations, Sharma said.

Zomato takes a 'jab' at Deepinder Goyal's 'chief of staff' role, says 'no need to pay us Rs 20 lakh' for new offer
Zomato has introduced a «special weekend» offer for its Gold membership program, subtly referencing their CEO, Deepinder Goyal, who recently made headlines for an unusual ₹20 lakh job offer. The company posted on X (formerly Twitter) with the message, «update from CEO.» Earlier this month, Goyal announced that he was looking for a Chief of Staff, stating that the candidate would need to pay a ₹20 lakh «fee» and work for free. He later clarified that the steep fee was intended as a «filter» and would not actually be collected. In a playful jab at the earlier controversy, Zomato's social media team shared a quirky post promoting its weekend offer, humorously claiming it was approved by the «Chief of Marketing Staff,» another subtle dig at the situation.

Attention GST taxpayers: November 30, 2024 is last day to claim pending input tax credit by filing GSTR 3B
input tax credit (ITC) or amend any errors or omissions in compliance with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rules and regulations for FY 2023-24 by GST-registered taxpayers. If the taxpayer misses today’s date, he/she may lose out on claiming ITC benefit for FY 2023-24 under GST if any ITC claims are pending. It will result in a loss for the taxpayer as he/she will not be able to offset output GST liability with input tax credit. Dinesh Jotwani, Co- Managing partner at Jotwani Associates says, «Section 16(4) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 reads as follows: A registered person shall not be entitled to take input tax credit in respect of any invoice or debit note for supply of goods or services or both after the due date of furnishing of the return under section 39 for the month of September following the end of financial year to which such invoice or invoice relating to such debit note pertains or furnishing of the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. Therefore, all GST-registered taxpayers must claim any pending input tax credit (ITC) for FY 2023-24 by November 30th. This is also the deadline for filing a GST form to amend any errors or omissions. Please do so to avoid the loss of Input Tax Credit Benefits.” Also Read: GSTN approves 5 apps for faster GST invoices verification

Q2 growth shocker puts pressure on RBI to cut rates
Gross domestic product grew 5.4% in the three months to September from a year earlier, the Statistics Ministry said in a statement on Friday. That’s the worst reading since the fourth quarter of 2022 and much lower than the central bank’s projection of 7% for the period. None of the 44 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted such a slow pace of expansion. Bonds rallied as traders now expect the central bank to start loosening monetary policy. The yield on the 10-year benchmark bond fell 6 basis points to 6.74%.
