US election: Gaza emerges as top issue for many New York Muslims
Islamic Cultural Centre located on Riverside Drive in New York City, hundreds of Muslims from in and around the neighbourhood join the Friday prayers. One of the main 'dua' made after the prayer is for the people of Gaza. Ali, a corporate professional, is a regular worshipper here, particularly on Fridays. He says the international issues are overshadowing the domestic concerns of the community in November 5 presidential elections. «There are plenty of issues, but I don't think anything comes close to what we are seeing in Gaza. There is a large part of the Muslim community that isn't feeling comfortable with the words and the actions of the candidates,» he said.

Justin Trudeau extends Diwali wishes amid India-Canada tensions
Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, on Friday extended Diwali wishes amid tensions with India. «Today, we join millions of people in Canada and around the world to celebrate Diwali,» his statement read. “Diwali in Canada would not be possible without our incredible Indo-Canadian community," it further said. While lauding the Indo-Canadians, the PM said that they represent the best of Canada – as artists and entrepreneurs, as doctors and teachers, as leaders in business, community, and culture. «On Diwali, we celebrate them and the light they carry across Canada’s communities,» he further added. Explaining the significance of the auspicious occasion, Trudeau's statement read, «Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, of knowledge over ignorance. On this day, families will gather to pray at mandirs, exchange gifts, and take part in festivities across the country. Homes will be lit with candles and diyas. Fireworks will embrace the sky. This is a holiday of hope, and the bright lights of Diwali encourage us all to defeat darkness and find purpose.»

Why a Memphis community is fighting Elon Musk's supercomputer
Elon Musk, the world's richest man, is building what he says will be the world's largest supercomputer. Its electricity needs will rival those of 100,000 homes. The supercomputer's neighbors in southwest Memphis, Tennessee, have a problem with that. The project, part of Musk's xAI artificial intelligence business, sits in an old manufacturing plant on more than 550 acres. Before beginning operations there in July, xAI rolled in flatbed trucks loaded with almost 20 mobile power plants, fueled by natural gas, to help meet its electricity demands.

UK celebrates Diwali with hope for 'magic moment' to light candle on India FTA
Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India and is building towards that magic moment, Britain's minister in charge of the Indo-Pacific said during a special Diwali reception in London. Catherine West, parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), referenced the previous Conservative government's Diwali 2022 deadline to complete the FTA negotiations as she reiterated the recently elected Labour government's commitment to get the deal done. The FTA negotiations, which were paused for general elections in both countries, are aimed at significantly enhancing the estimated GBP 38.1 billion a year bilateral trading partnership. «As the new government, we're still extremely keen to be getting on with our trade deal, which was meant to be signed a couple of Diwalis ago. But we don't mind, what's a Diwali between friends,» said West, addressing the FCDO's gathering of parliamentarians, community leaders and professionals at Lancaster House to celebrate the Festival of Lights. «Our new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is in the works, and all of these things go to building towards that magic moment where we light the candle on the free trade agreement. While I'm thinking of a lot of different things (this Diwali), it would be good to light the candle on that deal. Please pray for those negotiations, so we can have the light that goes on to the best positive feelings and the magic that you do get when you get a deal,» she said.

US presidential elections: Indian-Americans throwing weight behind Kamala Harris
US presidential election heads for a photo finish, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, has been counting on groundswell of support from the Indian-American community in most of the pivotal battleground states. For a sizable number of Indian Americans, Vice President Harris's race to the White House is a momentous occasion as it is propelling the community into a notable force in the American political discourse. «It is a matter of pride that a leader of Indian-descent is fighting the US presidential election,» said Dr Vasudev Patel, general secretary of the Federation of Indian-American Association of Georgia. Georgia is one of the seven key battleground states and Patel says the Indian-American community could play a significant role in swinging the election in Harris's favour.
