Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a coalition of the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Nationalist Congress Party (SP), has called off its planned bandh on August 24 in Maharashtra following the Bombay High Court's intervention. The MVA initially called the bandh in response to the alleged sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls in the Badlapur district. The High Court noted that enforcing the bandh would paralyze normal life and cited its 2004 order declaring such bandhs unconstitutional. The Bombay High Court bench, composed of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar, heard two petitions challenging the band call. In its ruling, the bench said that significant losses could occur if political parties proceeded with the bandh. The court stated, «Until further orders all concerned are restrained from proceeding with the call for bandh on August 24 and also on any other further date. We are, prima facie, convinced the call given by political parties is a call to observe bandh tomorrow in the entire state of Maharashtra, which means a call for cessation of all kinds of activities which will result in the life of the state coming to a halt, that may entail heavy loss to industrial activities, business activities, economic activities and other such activities.»
