Australian businesses dipping into savings, but arrears still low
SYDNEY—Australian businesses are dipping into savings to cover day-to-day running costs and repay debts amid higher-for-longer rates, but arrears remain low for now, the head of business banking at the country’s largest lender said. Like households, businesses built up cash buffers during the pandemic, and strong post-Covid demand supported business profitability. Recent Australian regulator data cited by UBS showed overall bank deposits fell in May, with an uptick in household savings being more than offset by contracting business and government deposits.

Karnataka: Vijayendra, Ashoka arrested as BJP lays seige to CM's home over MUDA, Valmiki scam, price hikes
Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra, leader of opposition R Ashoka, and several party workers were detained by the police on Wednesday as they tried to lay seige to chief minister Siddaramaiah's home in Bengaluru to a protest to protest the alleged Valmiki Development Corporation scam and the recent fuel and milk price hike. The leaders also demanded a CBI inquiry and the CM's resignation in connection with alleged irregularities in Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). “We will continue our demonstrations. In the next stage, we will protest inside the Houses of the state legislature until the cases are handed over to the CBI. The CM should resign,” Ashoka said after the protest. The BJP, he added, wanted the contentious allocation of sites to be cancelled immediately. “More than 86,000 people have applied to MUDA for sites. They did not get them. They are still waiting for sites. But the CM was allotted a site in a jiffy,” he said. The government, Vijayendra alleged, was protecting MUDA officials by just transferring, not suspending, them. “They are trying to cover up corruption. We will protest across the state,” he added.

Heat, humidity or hale: 'majboori' makes gig workers brave the elements
heat wave to high humidity and now the monsoon, all within days. And as many retreated indoors, it was left to gig workers to brave the elements as they delivered food and myriad essentials on their two-wheelers. Heat, humidity, hail, or heavy rain, when the weather gets tough, theirs is the band that gets going, working harder and for longer hours than earlier. It's a job that has been getting increasingly tough with extreme weather events becoming more commonplace and frequent. Weaving in and out of lanes as they whiz through traffic, Vimlesh Kumar is amongst the thousands of gig workers in Delhi-NCR. Waiting outside a bakery in Ghaziabad for the rain to stop one day last week, the 27-year-old said he has mixed emotions on such days — worried that he might get sick, glad it will pay him more.

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Thursday said that regulators like SEBI and appellate forums like the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) need to exercise caution when there is a surge in the stock market as they assume immense national importance in fostering a stable and predictable investment environment. Inaugurating the new appellate tribunal premises in Mumbai, the CJI Chandrachud said: “The more you see the surge in the stock market, the greater the role, I believe, for SEBI and SAT, as institutions which will exercise caution, celebrate the successes but at the same time, ensure that the backbone is stable.”
