IMD predicts heatwave in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and parts of Gujarat during next five days
Indian Meteorological Department said on Sunday that heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, over the next five days, cautioning people against exposure to the sun. Isolated pockets in the districts of Saurashtra-Kutch, Banaskantha and Valsad experienced heatwave conditions on Sunday, the IMD said in its latest bulletin for Gujarat. A similar situation is likely to be seen in the districts of Saurashtra-Kutch as well as Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Anand, Banaskantha and Valsad till Friday morning, it said. These regions will witness a high temperature with an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people exposed to sun or engaged in heavy work, the weather bureau said.

Delhi experienced scorching temperatures on Sunday, hitting a peak of 44.4 degrees Celsius, prompting the weather office to issue a 'red alert' due to severe heatwave conditions in the city. This marked the highest temperature recorded so far this summer, following a steady climb in temperatures over recent days. While Safdarjung recorded a high of 44.4 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, other areas of the city witnessed even more extreme conditions, with temperatures soaring above 47 degrees Celsius. Najafgarh recorded a high of 47.8 degrees Celsius, while Mungeshpur reached 47.7 degrees, Aya Nagar hit 46.4 degrees, Pusa saw 46.5 degrees, Pitampura recorded 47 degrees, and Palam registered 45.1 degrees. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted mainly clear skies with heatwave conditions prevailing in many parts of Delhi and severe heatwave conditions in others, accompanied by strong surface winds at speeds of 25-35 kmph on Monday.

Nepal follows HK and Singapore, bans India’s Everest and MDH spices
Indian spice-mix products of MDH and Everest on Friday due to quality issues, following in the footsteps of Hong Kong and Singapore. Nepal’s Department of Food Technology and Quality reported that the ban is due to the suspicion of ethylene oxide contamination. The banned spices include madras curry powder, sambhar mixed masala powder, mixed masala curry powder of MDH, and fish curry masala of Everest. The importers and traders are requested to recall these products from the Nepalese market. “As residue contents of ethylene oxide are found to be exceeding the prescribed limit in these four products, the import and sale of these products are banned within the country as per Article 19 of the Food Regulation 2027 B.S.,” Nepal's Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, in a notice said.

The advisory specifically targets those using calcium carbide for artificial ripening, especially during the mango season. This practice is strictly prohibited. FSSAI has urged the Food Safety Departments of States and Union Territories to be vigilant and take stringent action against those violating these regulations. The authority emphasised that using calcium carbide, a hazardous chemical, poses significant health risks and contravenes the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with its associated rules and regulations. By enforcing these measures, FSSAI aims to ensure the safety and health of consumers while maintaining the integrity of the fruit market.

Southwest Monsoon is very likely to advance into the South Andaman Sea, some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around May 19, the IMD said. It further said that a cyclonic circulation lies over south interior Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood in low and mid-tropospheric levels. A trough runs from south Chhattisgarh to South Interior Karnataka and another trough runs from Marathwada to a cyclonic circulation over south interior Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels.

Forest authorities have sounded a red alert for 36 villages in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district as a tiger is on the prowl after killing a 62-year-old man in the region close to the capital Bhopal, an official said on Saturday. The half-eaten body of the victim, Maniram Jatav, a resident of Neemkheda village, was found on Wednesday in the east range of the Raisen forest division, about 35 km from Bhopal district headquarters, the official said. The big cat was seen moving around and changing its location frequently, he said. The attack has caused panic among villages as such killings are unheard of in the forested areas around Bhopal.
