Tamil Nadu goes to town on manufacturing. Target: hinterland
Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district, famed for being a hub for power loom weaving. But the small town, which is barely a hundred kilometres from state capital Chennai, is now poised to emerge as a nodal destination for global automobile manufacturing. In September, Tata Motors broke ground for its Rs 9,000 crore greenfield factory designed to produce cars for local and overseas markets for Tata Motors and JLR. The ambitious project is expected to create over 5,000 employment opportunities--both direct and indirect--and drive significant skill-building in the local community. Panapakkam has a population of around 11,536 as per 2011 census with residents primarily engaged in agriculture and weaving. The town is known as the production centre for power loom lungis, the sarong-like wrap favoured as everyday wear by multitudes of south Indian men.

According to New York Post, in an op-ed which was recently published, Jeff Bezos described the move as a principal decision which eventually reflects the commitment of the newspaper towards independence. New York Post reported that Jeff Bezos also made an argument that endorsements do not really influence undecided voters and emphasized on the need for media credibility acknowledging the fact that public trust in journalism has eventually declined. Premium products are fast flying off the shelves despite slowdown
premium products from daily groceries and household items to smartphones and beer has bucked the slowdown trend, especially in cities where consumers have cut back on lower-priced products amid inflation. Most consumer companies during the September quarter earnings indicated that urban growth tapered off even as demand in villages recovered gradually. «We actually looked under the bonnet. And even when you peel the surface, you find that the premium segments, popular segments, mass segments, the rank order of hierarchy of growth is the same as observed in other quarters. Premium continues to grow 30-odd percent or thereabouts faster than the other segments. And we see the trend of upgradation remaining consistent and secular even in rural,» Rohit Jawa, managing director at Hindustan Unilever said. Urban markets grew 4.3% while rural areas saw volume growth at 3.9% within the FMCG segment, as per latest data by Kantar. This was compared to a growth of 8.1% in cities and 6.3% in villages a year ago, indicating broad-based slowdown across markets.

New Hezbollah leader says will accept ceasefire with Israel if terms 'suitable'
Hezbollah's new leader Naim Qassem on Wednesday said the group would agree to a ceasefire with Israel under acceptable terms, but added that a viable deal has yet to be presented. Qassem, who was named Hezbollah secretary-general on Tuesday, did not explicitly link a Lebanon ceasefire to an end to fighting in Gaza, a position previously held by the Iran-backed group. «If the Israelis decide that they want to stop the aggression, we say we accept, but under the conditions that we see as appropriate and suitable,» Qassem said in a pre-recorded speech, his first since he was named the group's new leader.

Donald Trump reacted unexpectedly after US president called his supporters ‘garbage’
Donald Trump addressed supporters at a rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, calling for a surprising show of unity and forgiveness towards President Joe Biden. Trump’s remarks followed Biden’s recent comment describing Trump’s supporters as “garbage” during a get-out-the-vote call with Voto Latino, a statement that quickly drew criticism. Referring to Biden's words, Trump urged his supporters to “forgive” the president, framing the appeal as a demonstration of unity amid deepening partisan divides, as mentioned in a report by Fox News. At the rally, Trump compared Biden’s comments to Hillary Clinton’s infamous 2016 remark calling some of Trump’s supporters “deplorables.” Trump quipped, “Garbage, I think, is worse,” and went on to say, “But he [Biden] doesn’t know. You have to please forgive him.”

Centre proposes to lower benchmark price for bauxite
benchmark price of bauxite (source of aluminium and gallium) used for calculating value of estimated resources and premium payable in auctions. According to a Mines Ministry proposal, the current Average Sale Price (ASP) of Bauxite contains a conversion factor of 6.4%. The Mineral Concession Rules, 2016 provide a formula for calculating the ASP for metallurgical grade bauxite on the basis of London Metal Exchange (LME) price of Aluminium. This existing conversion factor was opposed by mining companies which claimed the price arrived by using this metric was too high and approached multiple courts of law, the Ministry said. It has now been proposed to lower the conversion factor for metallurgical grade bauxite to 4.90% after a committee constituted for ASP rationalising submitted its report.
