Giving anticipatory bail in NDPS Act case 'very serious' issue, unheard of: SC
anticipatory bail in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is a «very serious» issue and «unheard of», the Supreme Court said on Thursday. A bench headed by Justice B R Gavai and also comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and K V Viswanathan was hearing a plea filed by an accused seeking regular bail in a case lodged for alleged offences under provisions of the NDPS Act in West Bengal. The bench directed the West Bengal government to consider whether the state proposes to file an application seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to four accused in a case. It issued notice to the state of West Bengal on the accused's bail plea and posted it for hearing after four weeks.

Will English dominate machine communication? Mayank Kumar to demystify the future of coding at ET Soonicorns Summit 2024
This thought-provoking topic will be at the heart of a Fireside chat featuring Mayank Kumar, Co-founder and Managing Director of upGrad, during the highly anticipated ET Soonicorns Summit 2024, set to take place on September 20 in Bengaluru. As the summit’s theme of ‘From Resurgence to Resilience’ drives home, this session will offer actionable insights into how startups and developers can recalibrate for the future. The event, taking place on September 20 in Bengaluru, will feature other industry stalwarts such as Hari Menon, Aman Gupta, Prayank Swaroop, Sangeeta Bavi, and Umakant Soni, among others, who will engage in dialogues on the evolving funding landscape, building business through strategic reinvention, and the technologies of tomorrow. However, to fully grasp the relevance of Kumar’s Fireside chat, we must first understand the role of English in today’s programming world. English has long been the default language for most programming languages—whether it’s Python, Java, C++, or JavaScript. From syntax to function names and even documentation, English is deeply embedded in the linguistic architecture of software development. This widespread use of English in programming has removed linguistic barriers to a great extent considering English, today, has been described as the “fastest-spreading language in human history. English is estimated to be spoken by some 1.75 billion people worldwide—that’s one in every four of us. The count includes both native speakers and speakers in post-colonial parts of the world. English is also increasingly a global corporate lingua franca. Interestingly, two Indian languages are part of the world’s top 10 most spoken languages: Hindi and Bengali.

Banks step up vigil on fraudulent account opening via digital banking channels
digital banking channels. This is a practice usually followed by lenders while opening credit accounts, but is now being replicated for deposit accounts too, according to three people in the know. This comes at a time when banks are trying to weed out mule accounts —accounts which receive funds from illegal sources or through fraudulent transactions — from their systems. Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das had at a July 3 meeting urged bank chief executives to step up their fight against such accounts. “Some of the largest banks in the country could be processing around Rs 300-400 crore worth of fraudulent transactions through mule accounts on a monthly basis; for mid-tier banks, the amount could be around Rs 50-100 crore. This is becoming a serious problem for banks as digital payments become more ubiquitous,” a senior banker with a private sector bank said on the condition of anonymity.

Prices of major agri commodities to stay stable: Govt
agricultural commodities – wheat, rice, edible oil, sugar, pulses and vegetables will not see any sharp rise during the upcoming festive season, said Sanjeev Chopra, food secretary on Wednesday, adding that the government will restore the distribution of 35 lakh tonnes of wheat for PMGKAY which it had replaced with rice during the last two years due to lower. He also added that the proposal for easing restrictions on exports of white rice and parboiled rice is under consideration and the decision will come at an appropriate time. “We are not anticipating any kind of price rise in any commodity during the festive season,” said Chopra, adding that the restoration of wheat for PMGKAY will add to the wheat availability, keeping a check on prices of the staple.
