Ajit Pawar on Sunday said the Mahayuti constituents, including the NCP led by him, are free to contest local bodies elections independently. Addressing Nationalist Congress Party workers in Pimpri Chinchwad city, he argued that independent contests would help strengthen the cadres. «Even though we are allies in Lok Sabha and state assembly, Mahayuti members are free to contest local bodies polls independently,» he said. The schedule for elections to local bodies, which include municipal councils, nagar panchayats and zilla parishads, is not yet finalised.

India trade talks set to be revived with first major UK ministerial visit
free trade agreement negotiations are set to be defined this week as UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected in India on Tuesday, the first high-profile visit under the newly elected Labour government in Britain. The free trade agreement (FTA) talks began in January 2022, under the then Conservative government, with a target to significantly boost the GBP 38.1 billion a year bilateral trading partnership but hit a block in the fourteenth round of negotiations to make way for general elections in both countries. A report in 'The Daily Telegraph' on Sunday quotes a New Delhi source to claim the Indian side would seek clarity on whether the Labour government intends to pick things up from where they were left off or start afresh in some way. «India is keen to resume talks on a positive note, but the date needs clarity,» the source told the newspaper.

Bangladesh’s top court scales back government jobs quota after deadly unrest killed scores
Bangladesh’s top court on Sunday scaled back a controversial quota system for government job applicants after it led to nationwide unrest and deadly clashes between police and protesters that have killed scores of people. The Supreme Court in its verdict ordered 93% of the government jobs to be allocated on a merit-based system, leaving the remaining 7% for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971 and other categories. Earlier, the system reserved 30% of such jobs the relatives of war veterans. Sunday's verdict comes after weeks of demonstrations — mostly led by students — that turned deadly on Tuesday after protesters began clashing with police. During the week, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets and hurled smoke grenades to scatter stone-throwing protesters who filled the streets and university campuses. Sporadic clashes in some parts of Dhaka, the capital, were reported on Saturday but it was not immediately clear whether there were any fatalities.

We lost seats not people's support, says Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule at party convention
Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Sunday said his party maintained its support among people despite losing seats in the recent Lok Sabha polls. He was addressing the party's state convention in Pune, which is being attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the party's state in charge and Union minister Bhupender Yadav, co-incharge Ashwini Vaishnaw, among others. «The BJP lost some seats in the Lok Sabha elections, but our voter base remains strong. There is no need to worry about it. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the BJP secured 1,33,08,961 votes. The number increased in the subsequent assembly elections, with the BJP receiving 1,47,09,276 votes,» Bawankule pointed out. «In the 2019 general elections, the BJP obtained 1,49,12,139 votes. In the 2024 general elections, we got 1,49,13,914 votes. This clearly indicates the support for the BJP among the people remains unwavering. Nonetheless, we only secured nine seats in this Lok Sabha election,» he added.

Inside the Trump campaign’s hidden ground game
GERMANTOWN, Wis.—The Trump campaign’s effective takeover of the Republican National Committee has come with a new approach to on-the-ground canvassing efforts: doing more with less. The party says its get-out-the-vote effort, dubbed “Trump Force 47," is driven by a dedicated army of volunteers. It has been shrouded in secrecy since it launched earlier this year, raising questions in political circles about the ground-game strategy to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

US Presidential Election 2024: Democrats do not want Kamala Harris to receive a presidential nomination, according to this law maker from New York
Democrats that Joe Biden’s presidential nomination may only lead to a massive defeat of the party in the upcoming presidential election in November. While it was earlier clear among the Democrats that Vice-President Kamala Harris is the best candidate to replace Biden on the ballot box, there are doubts being cast now. Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has sounded a warning that Democrats who are seeking Biden’s ouster also want Harris to leave. The Congresswomen representing the state of New York made these comments on Friday in an Instagram live session. She even pointed out that Biden had secured a grand victory during the party’s primaries and this transition to Harris may be difficult.

Joe Biden announcing an end to his political campaign. There is growing opposition to his presidential nomination with many of the Democrats, two-thirds of them calling on the president to end his campaign and make way for another Democrat to take over. The candidate who may take Biden’s place is Vice-President Kamala Harris. The road to success is not going to be smooth for her. She is expected to face opposition to her candidature and also face other logistical challenges related to waging a presidential campaign. Further, she has a formidable opponent in the form of Donald Trump whose popularity is only growing in recent times.

Understanding the Budget: A step-by-step guide for investors
Union Budget. This time, I want to talk about how to understand the Budget in a very simple way. A country’s Budget is nothing but the plan of how it will meet the expenses and arrange means to achieve them via income sources. A Budget is a financial statement that documents the government’s expected expenditure across all fields for the next year and matches it with the income or receipts expected from various sources.

Democratic calls mount for Biden to end campaign, but he vows to fight on
Joe Biden vowed on Friday to continue his campaign for reelection even as more fellow Democrats in Congress urged him to end his floundering campaign, fearing that it could cost the party dearly in the Nov. 5 election. More than one in 10 congressional Democrats have now publicly called on the 81-year-old incumbent — who is isolating at his Delaware home with a case of COVID — to drop out following a disastrous June debate against Republican Donald Trump that raised questions about Biden's ability to win or to carry out his duties for another four years. Biden remained defiant, saying he would resume campaigning soon.

If Joe Biden doesn't have cognitive function... how can he remain as US President?: JD Vance
Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance, on Friday took a shot at US President Joe Biden, asking how he can remain in office if he doesn't have the "cognitive function" to run for re-election. Taking to X, the Ohio Senator asked, «If Joe Biden doesn't have the cognitive function to run for re-election, then he certainly doesn't have the cognitive function to remain as Commander-In-Chief. How can any Dem pushing him to drop out of the presidential race, argue in good faith that he should stay on as POTUS?» His statement came as several Democrats have called for Biden to step aside as the party nominee. Biden has been under intense scrutiny following his incoherent performance in the nationally televised 90-minute debate with Trump earlier this month. However, Biden has vowed he will be «running this race to end» of the November election.

Donald Trump 2024: The Unifier
Donald Trump, sombre and bandaged, accepted the GOP presidential nomination on Thursday at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in a speech that described in detail the assassination attempt that could have ended his life just five days earlier before laying out a sweeping populist agenda, particularly on immigration. The 78-year-old former US President, known best for his bombast and aggressive rhetoric, began his acceptance speech with a softer and deeply personal message that drew directly from his brush with death. Moment by moment, the crowd listening in silence, Trump described standing onstage in Butler, Pennsylvania, with his head turned to look at a chart on display when he felt something hit his ear. He raised his hand to his head and saw immediately that it was covered in blood. «If I had not moved my head at that very last instant, the assassin's bullet would have perfectly hit its mark,» Trump said. «And I would not be here tonight. We would not be together.»
