US Presidential Election 2024: What are the odds of Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden? Betting markets reflect recent trends
Joe Biden, it is now even the betting markets who are losing faith in the president and his ability to continue in office. Research on the various betting markets has revealed that the odds of Vice-President Kamala Harris replacing Biden on the ballot box are higher. In the betting markets, a basic principle is when the price of an outcome is priced low, the likelihood of it happening is high. Higher the price means lower the expected outcome. Higher the price also indicates higher the risk and the person betting on the outcome taking a higher risk in favor of the outcome and expecting a positive outcome.

Why is there an outrage over Joe Biden’s “I am sick” post?
Joe Biden’s post on X (formerly Twitter) is being closely scrutinized by many people including his own party members. He is presently being treated for COVID-19 and has called off certain campaign events over the past few days and returned to his home at Delaware. This cryptic post on a social networking site only raises further questions. This has been reported by Axios. In recent times, the pressure on Joe Biden to call off his election campaign has increased and there is increasing pressure on him to step aside. Hence, this message calling for political donations has only led to more confusion among the Democratic party legislators and others who are opposed to Biden’s campaign.

History of violence in Bangladesh, a country born out of war
protests by thousands of students in Bangladesh against quotas in government jobs has brought focus to a history of violence in a country born out of a war between India and Pakistan in 1971 in which nearly 3 million people were killed. Its founding father and first prime minister Sheikh Mujibur Rehman was assassinated in 1975 in a military coup which brought in a long period of military rule. Though democracy was restored slowly by 1990, the country of nearly 170 million people has been rocked by sporadic periods of sectarian or political violence in recent years.

Sonowal highlighted Dibrugarh's historical prosperity, noting its status as one of India's wealthiest districts even before independence. The region's abundant resources, including tea, coal, wood, and petroleum, have historically contributed to its economic significance. Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the historical neglect faced by Dibrugarh under successive Congress governments post-independence. He credited the revitalization of the region to the proactive measures undertaken during the Vajpayee and Modi administrations, leading to significant advancements across rail, road, air, and water connectivity. This resurgence has spurred industrialization and youth employment in Dibrugarh, underscoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inclusive development agenda of «Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.»

Congress won't let Tripura become second Manipur: Gaurav Gogoi amid panchayat poll violence
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Friday said his party would not let Tripura, which has been rocked by violence over panchayat elections, turn into another Manipur. Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, led a delegation of his party that visited the violence-affected areas of the state. «The Congress firmly stands with its leaders, workers and the people of Tripura during these difficult times. Politics of religious frenzy will not be accepted: Ashok Gehlot to BJP
Ashok Gehlot on Friday hit out at the BJP, saying the politics of religious frenzy will not be accepted in the country. His comments were apparently in the wake of the BJP losing the Uttarakhand bypolls. «BJP has always been doing politics of religion, but misleading the public and spreading hatred in the name of God is not religion but adharma,» Gehlot said on X. «In the last 10 years, the BJP has done the work of increasing religious frenzy in the country in a very planned manner. But the fact is that in the recently held Lok Sabha elections and assembly elections, the BJP has lost in most of the religious cities like Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Sitapur, Shivganga, Prayagraj, Nashik, Ramtek, Badrinath, Shravasti, Manglore (District- Haridwar),» he said.

Budget: What middle class taxpayers got from Interim Budget and what they didn't
Budget 2024: In the past few years, India's middle class taxpayers have routinely witnessed high pre-budget expectations turning into deep post-budget disappointment. This time, however, some analysts reckon that there appears to be a more realistic chance of budget sops for taxpayers because of the relatively weak mandate that Modi govt got, which apparently underlined the discontent among some key voter groups including the urban middle class. The interim budget tabled by FM Nirmala Sitharaman ahead of the 2024 general elections did not have any significant announcement on tax matters. There, however, were a few initiatives aimed at the common man in areas such as healthcare, housing and power. Here is a look at some of the important Interim Budget announcements in areas that have a direct bearing on the common man.

Rahul Gandhi's refusal to meet before 2014 polls key reason for Ram Vilas leaving UPA: Chirag Paswan
Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan says Rahul Gandhi's refusal to meet his father despite months of trying was a key reason for Ram Vilas Paswan leaving the Congress-led UPA and allying with the BJP just before the 2014 elections. Asked about his opinion of Rahul Gandhi, Chirag Paswan told PTI editors in an interaction at the agency's headquarters that the Congress leader has of late begun taking his responsibility «a bit more seriously» and criticised his recent speech in Parliament as unbecoming of the leader of opposition. Chirag Paswan then recalled that he and his father had often met Sonia Gandhi to discuss the future of their party in the UPA alliance. Sonia Gandhi suggested that Ram Vilas Paswan meet her son. The senior Paswan sought an appointment and waited for more than three months but Rahul Gandhi did not relent, said Chirag Paswan, who at that time too was keen to leave the UPA and join the NDA. Ram Vilas Paswan, however, was still keen to remain in the UPA, and wanted to discuss that with Rahul Gandhi, the son said.

Donald Trump, he has got a clear lead over his rival President Joe Biden for the November presidential elections. UK retail sales dip in June across most sectors after May rebound
According to data from the Office for National Statistics, the fall in sales volumes followed a 2.9% rise in May. Non-food stores sales volumes fell by 2.1% in June 2024, after 3.3% growth in May. The decline was led by poor figures in the department stores and clothing retailers sectors, with their sales volumes dropping by 3.4% and 1.6%, respectively, and returning to levels seen in the first quarter of this year. Retailers argued this came on the back of election uncertainty, along with poor weather and low footfall. Falling UK wage growth boosts chances of August rate cut Fo...

Federal appeals court blocks remainder of Biden's student debt relief plan
Biden administration's student debt relief plan, which would have lowered monthly payments for millions of borrowers. In a ruling Thursday, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a motion for an administrative stay filed by a group of Republican-led states seeking to invalidate the administration's entire student loan forgiveness program. The court's order prohibits the administration from implementing the parts of the SAVE plan that were not already blocked by lower court rulings. The ruling comes the same day that the Biden administration announced another round of student loan forgiveness, this time totaling $1.2 billion in forgiveness for roughly 35,000 borrowers who are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

Donald Trump wants to weaken the US dollar: Can he?
Unless US President Joe Biden lets another Democrat contest this year’s election, Republican candidate Donald Trump seems all but sure to win the White House. It’s not just opinion polls. Consider the contrast in optics: A visibly ageing Biden who looked stumped at a key debate versus a fist-pumping Trump who arose unshaken from the snick of an assassin’s bullet.
