Joe Biden cancels additional $1.2 billion in student debt
Joe Biden on Thursday canceled another $1.2 billion in student debt for 35,000 borrowers, bringing the total number of people to benefit from his debt relief push to 4.76 million, despite Republican opposition. Republicans have called the Democratic president's student loan forgiveness approach an overreach of authority and an unfair benefit to college-educated borrowers while others received no such relief. Each of the beneficiaries under the plan will receive $35,000 in debt cancellation, the White House said in a statement.

From "Kamala can't win" to "can Kamala win?": Joe Biden's stance on 2024 US Presidential re-election
Biden's predicament comes amidst increasing frustration and anxiety within the Democratic Party, which has been simmering for nearly three weeks since his dismal debate performance in Atlanta. According to multiple Democratic officials who spoke to CNN, the atmosphere within the White House and the Biden campaign has shifted notably in recent days. A senior Democratic adviser, who requested anonymity to avoid alienating the campaign and the White House, told CNN, «The private conversations with the Hill are continuing. He's being receptive. Not as defiant as he is publicly.» The adviser elaborated, «He's gone from saying, 'Kamala can't win,' to 'Do you think Kamala can win?' It's still unclear where he's going to land but seems to be listening.»

India plans to ease rice export curbs as stocks surge to record, sources say
India is likely to cut the floor price for basmati rice exports and replace the 20% export tax on parboiled rice with a fixed duty on overseas shipments, government sources said, as rice inventories in the country jumped a record high. The world's biggest rice exporter imposed various curbs on exports in 2023 and continued them in 2024 in an effort to keep local prices in check ahead of the general elections held in April-May. New Delhi is expected to lower the basmati rice's minimum export price (MEP) to $800-$850 a metric ton, down from $950 a ton, to boost shipments, said the sources, who didn't wish to be identified as they are not authorised to talk to media.

Yogi Adityanath cites overconfidence, Maurya says Sanghathan first: Here's what's going wrong in UP BJP
Uttar Pradesh (UP) state executive in Lucknow, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath acknowledged the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) overconfidence as a factor in its unexpected reverses in the Lok Sabha (LS) polls. This meeting, attended by BJP president J.P. Nadda, highlighted internal tensions amidst accusations and the need for organizational restructuring, a TOI report stated. UP CM Yogi Adityanath candidly acknowledged the overconfidence that may have impacted BJP’s recent performance, pointing out how the opposition, previously dispirited, now appears rejuvenated after their electoral gains. He addressed the “fake narratives” pushed by the opposition, particularly concerning the controversy over reservations. «When we assume with such confidence that we are winning, naturally we have to pay the price. The opposition, which had lost heart before the election, is now working with a renewed spring in their step,» Adityanath stated in English during the meeting.

Modi govt may finally realise Rs 29,000 cr from divestment of this bank following RBI green signal
IDBI Bank ahead of the Union Budget 2024 and all eyes are now on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Narendra Modi government had set the ball rolling for divesting its stake in the development financial institution-turned bank in May 2021. Since then, the Centre has been waiting for the green signal from the RBI as the central bank assessed if the bidders met the fit and proper norms. These norms check if the bidders are compliant with regulations and are not under the scanner of other regulators. The central bank has given its report on all but one bidder which happens to be a foreign participant, which did not share information and the overseas regulator too has not provided data, TOI on Thursday reported. With the current market cap nearing Rs 95,000 crore, the Centre could potentially realize around Rs 29,000 crore from the disinvestment. However, several observers have noted that the transaction terms are not very attractive.

Biden has continued to stay in the race and refused to step aside making way for another party member to take his place. Politico has reported that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has been working behind the scenes to convince Biden to step down and let another Democrat take over and contest against Trump. After the assassination attempt on Trump, Biden may have received a fresh lease of political life
assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump may have certain political effects on the opposition party. NBC News has reported that the opposition to US President Joe Biden may have ended after the assassination attempt. There are no reasons that have been attributed for this development. Many believe that the ‘Biden Out’ campaign may have lost the momentum after the narrative has shifted in favor of Trump who may have seen his approval ratings increase. Many of the campaigns targeting Trump have also been called off after the incident on Saturday. Earlier, many of the top Democrats had called on Biden to drop out of the presidential bid.

Biden says only one factor can convince him to step down; here is the reason
Joe Biden is only growing day by day. The president seeks to circumvent this by getting a presidential nomination when the party holds a virtual roll call in the coming weeks ahead of the national convention. However, there is one reason, according to Biden that will encourage him to drop out of the presidential election in November. In an interview to the Black Entertainment Television, Biden said that only if there are health challenges, he will step down. This interview will be aired on Wednesday and is being perceived as an effort by Biden to reach out to the minority voters whose support is critical for the party to emerge victorious.

Local govt reforms can create new vision for India’s cities of the future
This is part of a special series of articles by the country's foremost voices, ahead of Union Budget 2024, aiming to draw attention to the critical reforms that can help India in its journey to become a developed nation by 2047. It is now proven beyond doubt that India needs a new imagination of how to govern her cities. The last decade finally saw the emergence of the city as a political agenda and a significant increase in investments in urban infrastructure and services. But the narrowly focused, mission- and scheme-led development of our cities across both the Union and state governments is not delivering the desired results.
