Intent, welfare steps, nation first will give NDA third term: PM Modi
Narendra Modi claimed on Sunday that people have decided to elect him for a third term in these Lok Sabha elections due to "good intentions, welfare policies and dedication to the nation" of his dispensation in the last decade. While campaigning in Uttar Pradesh, he alleged that the erstwhile Samajwadi Party government in the state would even release terrorists for appeasement politics. Modi addressed BJP public meetings in Mirzapur, Ghosi and Bansgaon in UP on Sunday where he attacked the Samajwadi Party and Congress on law and order issues and alleged plans of giving reservation to Muslims from the SC, ST and OBC quota.

Veteran Sikh faces missing from Punjab election scene
Lok Sabha election in Punjab this time is unprecedented compared to the last few decades, as many prominent Sikh leaders are missing from the poll scene in multi-cornered contests and a new player -AAP — is in power in the state. Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who was a dominating face of Punjab politics in the state for the last two decades, is missing from the poll scene this season. Owing to his ill health, Singh has been keeping away. But family members of SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, who passed away last year, and Amarinder Singh — Badal's daughter in-law Harsimrat Kaur and Amarinder Singh's wife Perneet Kaur are contesting elections.

Bihar: Direct fight between BJP & RJD, but two independents may play spoilsport in Buxar
BJP nominee for Buxar Mithilesh Tiwari is in a meeting with a restive group of disenchanted youth. There are growing reports of shifting loyalties of the young voters, particularly Brahmins. Speculation is rife that the youth in this constituency were showing an inclination to join the camp of independent candidate and ex-IPS officer Anand Mishra. One by one, they stood and spoke directly with Tiwari.

BJP focuses on caste management as Lok Sabha election enters final phase
election enters the last phase, the BJP leadership is going all out on a damage-control mission to avert possible setback in Bihar due to a caste imbalance in its support. There are eight parliament seats going for polls in the last phase in Bihar in the Magadh-Shahabad region. In 2019, NDA had won all eight with BJP winning five and ally JDU winning three. During the 2020 assembly elections, though, the RJD-led Grand Alliance performed better than NDA in this region. Now, in 2024, there is little change in the political equation and the ground situation. However, a clear division on caste lines is shaping up with the Kushwaha community, which used to be a strong support base of JDU leader and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, drifting away from NDA.

Palpable anger among farmers against BJP as Punjab heads to polls
Punjab): As the afternoon sun beats down on the tin shed, about a hundred farmers listen in rapt attention to the old farmer leader on the makeshift stage. «We have the right to ask questions from the government,» the leader is speaking on the stage at Shambhu on Punjab-Haryana border, where farmers were stopped from marching towards Delhi in mid-February. It has been over three months, but the anger is palpable. A small temporary township has come up at Shambhu border toll booth, about 200 km from Delhi and an hour's drive from Chandigarh. Hundreds of tractors and trolleys have been joined together to make small tenements for farmers. As the season changed from a pleasant spring to scorching summer, air coolers have been installed in these tents. The anger against the Modi government is now spilling into elections as all the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies of Punjab vote in the last phase of voting on June 1. «Vote for anyone but BJP — this is our call,» says Balwant Singh, state president Bharatiya Kisan Union (Behramke). Singh says the entire farmers morcha has sent word back to the villages to drive away BJP candidates if they come to campaign.

Top Stock Recommendations: Dharmesh Shah of ICICI Securities suggests buying RIL, and NTPC tomorrow
Stock Market News: Friday's intraday trading saw the domestic benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, reach record highs before ending slightly down as a result of profit-booking in the IT, FMCG, and healthcare sectors.Though the markets were supported by fresh inflows of foreign cash and steady prices of crude oil on international exchanges, traders noted that the dismal trend in global stocks weighed on the sentiments. For the second day in a row, markets were surging ahead of the Lok Sabha election results on June 4.The Sensex hit a new all-time high of 75,636.50 during the session, but it was unable to hold onto its gains and finished the day 8 points lower at 75,410.39. During the session, the Nifty 50 hit a new all-time high of 23,026.40, but it ended the day 11 points lower at 22,957.10.Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said that despite the recent US FOMC minutes suggesting a sustained hawkish stance on policy rates, sentiments in the global market remained muted. The US unemployment claims declined more than anticipated, business earnings held steady, and inflation remained obstinate, thus the Fed had no justification to lower interest rates.Large caps are taking a backseat to the overall market rise as the domestic market achieves new highs, suggesting that the short-term momentum will continue.

Sanjay Raut claims Fadnavis, Amit Shah worked against Nitin Gadkari in LS polls; draws flak from BJP, Congress leader
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis worked for Nitin Gadkari's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. Raut's claim has drawn sharp reactions from the BJP and Congress' candidate from Nagpur. Raut alleged that Fadnavis had unwillingly campaigned for Gadkari, who contested from the Nagpur Lok Sabha seat, when he realised the Union minister couldn't be defeated. Nagpur is the hometown of both BJP leaders.

Modi's 'mazboot' govt replaced 'majboor' UPA: JP Nadda
BJP president JP Nadda on Sunday credited his party with providing a «mazboot» (strong) government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was capable of penetrating Pakistan's borders to destroy terrorist hideouts. In contrast, the former Union minister charged, the Congress-led UPA government that got voted out in 2014 was «majboor, kamzor aur apang» (helpless, weak and crippled). Addressing back-to-back election rallies in Bihar's Arrah and Jehanabad constituencies, Nadda mocked the UPA for having sent «dossiers to Pakistan when the nation was rattled by terrorist attacks sponsored from across the border». «When Modi took over, and Uri and Pulwama happened, our troops penetrated Pakistan's borders to conduct surgical strikes and Balakot air strikes and beat the terrorists inside their homes,» he said.

Sometimes U.S. and U.K. politics seem in lockstep. Not this year.
United States follows with a momentous presidential election a few months later. It happened in 2016, when Britons voted for Brexit and Americans elected Donald Trump, and now it's happening again. Political soothsayers might be tempted to study the results of Britain's July 4 general election for clues about how the United States might vote on Nov. 5. In 2016, after all, the country's shock vote to leave the European Union came to be seen as a canary in the coal mine for Trump's surprise victory later that year.

Heard of work from home, first time hearing about work from jail: Rajnath Singh in dig at Kejriwal
Rajnath Singh on Sunday took a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying he had heard about «work from home» but it is the first time that he is hearing of "work from jail". Addressing an election rally in Khanna for the BJP's Fatehgarh Sahib candidate Gejja Ram Valmiki, Singh said, «Here, AAP is the ruling party. You don't need to be told much about what kind of work it is doing.» «There is also an AAP government in Delhi. But the AAP leader was jailed in the liquor scam,» Singh, said referring to Kejriwal's arrest in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam. The defence minister said he thinks every leader should have the moral courage to resign from their post if they face any allegation until being cleared of the charges.

No official response from Centre yet on request to cancel Prajwal's passport: K'taka Minister
diplomatic passport of Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of sexually abusing women. Taking a dig at External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's reported statement that the state government's request to cancel the diplomatic passport of Prajwal was received only on May 21, he sought to know what happened to the letter sent by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1. «As far as I know, we have not got any information or letter so far (from the Centre). I have seen that the External Affairs Minister has told the media that they are taking action and in a couple of days they will cancel it (diplomatic passport), but we have not got any written communication on this,» Parameshwara said. Speaking to reporters here, he said the Chief Minister on May 1 wrote a letter to the Prime Minister seeking cancellation of Prajwal's diplomatic passport, and after that the Special Investigation Team formed by the state government to probe the charges, too wrote a letter to the Centre with the same request.

Questions on India's economy that Modi and Gandhi should answer
law-backed MSPs, agriculture economist Ashok Gulati said, was rejected by Manmohan Singh of the Congress when he was PM. Gulati was chairman the official body that recommends MSP hikes during Singh’s tenure. Has the party disregarded Singh’s position on this subject or has he had a change of heart? Either way, the Congress must explain how price discovery can take place in farm markets if a legal MSP is made binding on all buyers.

Successful J-K polls success of Modi govt policy; next step Assembly polls, statehood, Amit Shah tells PTI
Amit Shah has said that the Modi government's Kashmir policy has been vindicated by the successful polling in Jammu and Kashmir, where even separatists have voted «overwhelmingly», as he assured that the assembly elections in the region will be held before September 30. Once the elections are over, the government will start the process of restoring statehood to the Union Territory, Shah said in an interview to PTI late Saturday. «I have said in Parliament that we will give the statehood after the assembly elections,» he said, adding that everything is going according to plan, such as the surveys of the backward classes and delimitation exercise of the Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies. «We have completed the delimitation process. Because the reservation can be given only after the delimitation process is completed. Because we have to know about the status of various castes (to give reservation). That has been done. Lok Sabha election is also over (in Jammu and Kashmir). Next is the assembly election which will also be held. We will complete the process before the Supreme Court deadline,» he said.

Charting the Global Economy: New policies considered to be trade-restrictive hit a record in 2023
Inflation is set to ease across Group of Seven economies, according to those countries’ central bankers, but the progress will be uneven. G-7 leaders meeting in Italy are weighing the durability of America’s growth momentum against the perennial sickliness of Europe’s expansion. However, the softer inflation outlook could be challenged by an aging global population as more old people are spending and fewer young people are producing. In the UK, figures on inflation, migration, private-sector activity, retail sales and consumer confidence have all been published since Wednesday morning, hours before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a snap general election. An announcement on household energy bills highlighted the political divide.
