Are we going through a healthy market correction or has the narrative changed? Vinod Karki answers
Vinod Karki, Equity Strategist, ICICI Securities, says the recent market correction appears to be primarily a response to the significant increase in US bond yields. Additionally, there are certain risks associated with economic growth, as evidenced by a noticeable deceleration in the economy. However, we attribute much of this slowdown to temporary factors such as elections and rainfall, which are likely to result in a postponement of demand until the latter half of this year. The predominant concern remains the escalation of bond yields and the prevailing optimism surrounding Trump, both of which have influenced market dynamics. Vinod Karki further notes that, in terms of overall market value, two sectors are distinctly prominent: large financial institutions and commodities. What is your take on the market fall on Monday because this is definitely getting on our nerves. Firstly, it hit the traders, breaching the key support levels, and now the investors are a little concerned about the fall. What is your take on the fall that we are witnessing? Is it a healthy correction or do you believe something has really changed in terms of the narrative? Vinod Karki: Fundamentally, the key reason why this is happening is the surge in US bond yields.

BNP and Jamaat-E-Islami take diverging paths in the absence of Awami League
Awami League absent from the political stage following the 5 August 2024 political changeover, the two long-standing allies, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), appear to be drifting apart as they vie for dominance ahead of the upcoming elections. The BNP has been trying to distance itself from the JeI to gain more support from secular and international communities. This move has led to internal disagreements within the BNP, as some leaders still see value in maintaining ties with the JeI. Additionally, the JeI has been focusing on its own political agenda, which sometimes conflicts with the BNP's goals. Supporters of both parties have been particularly active on social media, exchanging harsh words and fueling the growing hostility between them.

Mint Quick Edit | Can India’s sovereign bonds attract more foreign inflows?
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Reports suggest that the Securities and Exchange Board of India will soon ease the way for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) that intend to invest only in government securities. While these bonds saw inflows of about $14.5 billion via the “fully accessible route" in 2024, aided partly by their inclusion in the JP Morgan Emerging Market Index, more FPI money would have come in had US sovereign bond yields not surged after Donald Trump’s election win.

Delhi elections: Not a contender for any post, says BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri
Ramesh Bidhuri, former MP and BJP's candidate from Kalkaji seat against Delhi CM Atishi, issued a statement on Sunday dismissing as «completely baseless» AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal's claim that he will become the CM if the BJP comes to power. In an «appeal to the people of Delhi», Bidhuri said, «My party has given me a lot; I am not a contender to any post. Arvind Kejriwal has launched a misleading campaign against me. I wish to make it clear that I am not a contender for any post.» Kejriwal's words that Bidhuri may become the chief minister if BJP wins the assembly polls are being seen as an attempt to warn the people of the consequences if this comes true. Bidhuri had made objectionable remarks against Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Atishi. Earlier, he had used communal and abusive language against the then BSP MP Danish Ali in the previous Lok Sabha.

Bittersweet revdi politics: States struggle to fund freebie promises
Aditi Tatkare said women listed under Namo Shetkari and direct benefits schemes will not be eligible for Ladki Bahin Yojana — the scheme which promised ₹2,100 as pension to all women above 18 years and helped the Mahayuti alliance to come back to power. Early estimates show that this will help the Maharashtra government prune the 2.63-crore beneficiary list by 20 lakh. On January 1, Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu voluntarily surrendered the free electricity subsidy of 125 units in his name and urged all self-reliant individuals to follow suit. The appeal aims to benefit the state electricity board by ₹200 crore. The Congress government, which assumed power in December 2022, has been facing severe financial crunch and struggling to implement its election promises. In the process, it has started pruning the beneficiary list and tweaking freebies introduced by the previous BJP government. In October, in an exclusive interview to ET, Andhra CM N Chandrababu Naidu admitted he was struggling to implement super six promises made in the run-up to the assembly polls because of financial constraints.
