TMC MP Saket Gokhale demands Bharat Ratna for TN Seshan
Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan, saying he upheld the independence and dignity of the Election Commission. Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha through a Zero Hour mention, the TMC leader said Seshan was the 10th chief election commissioner and he redefined the way the Election Commission of India (ECI) functioned. «Seshan was a fiercely independent election commissioner. His famous quote 'I eat politicians for breakfast' showed that he worked without fear or favour and upheld the independence and dignity of the Election Commission,» he said. Giving reasons for his demand for Bharat Ratna for Seshan, Gokhale said that his strong image gave independence to the ECI. «Today the election commissioners are appointed directly by the government with a majority vote of Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and Home Minister (Amit) Shah on the selection panel. Neither the Chief Justice of India, which is the judiciary, nor the Leader of the Opposition, which is the legislature, have any say in the appointments,» he said. The TMC leader said «the ECI has now become a government-appointed body».

'Spent my childhood in extreme poverty': PM Modi talks about learnings he got from sitting at his father's tea shop
extreme poverty. «I learnt a lot from people who came to my father's tea shop while I used to sit there; I applied those learnings in my public life,» said PM Modi. «Every morning, around 4:00 or 4:30 am, he would leave the house, walk long distances, visit several temples, and then reach his shop,» PM Modi said. He described how his father’s traditional leather shoes made a distinct tock, tock, tock sound as he walked through the village. «People in the village used to say that they could tell the time just by hearing his footsteps—‘Oh yes, Mr. Damodar is on his way.’ Such was his discipline,» he recalled.

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore won’t return before March 19
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore should have been back on Earth nine months ago. Instead, they’ve been orbiting the planet aboard the International Space Station (ISS), waiting for a ride home. What was supposed to be an eight-day mission in June 2024 turned into an extended stay due to critical technical failures with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Now, NASA has confirmed that they will not return before March 19, 2025. Their return hinges on the successful launch and docking of the SpaceX Crew-10 mission, which will bring four astronauts to the ISS to replace Williams and Wilmore. The mission has faced repeated delays, primarily due to poor weather conditions and a last-minute technical issue with the Falcon 9 rocket.

Indian FMCG companies struggling with a shortage of salesmen amid growing gig economy
Indian FMCG companies are grappling with a shortage of salesmen. Companies selling daily essentials are finding recruiting the famed ‘feet on the street’ difficult in the face of intimidating sales targets amid a slowdown and more attractive gig workforce opportunities, executives said. This comes at a time when companies are looking to hire incremental sales force and direct distribution roles to penetrate newer tier-2 and tier-3 markets and the hinterland in expectation of demand recovery in the new fiscal. “It is progressively getting harder to find salesmen across FMCG. These are hard jobs, you’ve to pound the pavement and get the sales, when eight months of the year it's extremely hot or the weather is harsh,” said Dinkar Ayilavarapu, head of Flipkart Wholesale, the B2B marketplace owned by the Flipkart Group.

Progressive social policies, robust infra, placed TN on economic growth trajectory: Economic Survey
Tamil Nadu's progressive social policies, robust infrastructure facilities, and large skilled labour force enabled the state to place itself on an elevated economic development trajectory, making the state contribute 9.21 per cent to national GDP in 2023-24, Tamil Nadu's first economic survey 2024-25 said on Thursday. The survey brought out by the State Planning Commission and handed over to Chief Minister M K Stalin, said the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices reached Rs 27.22 lakh crore in 2023-24, posting a nominal growth rate of 13.71 per cent and a real growth rate of 8.33 per cent. «Tamil Nadu economy in 2024-25 faced global headwinds with its innate economic strength. The pandemic, coupled with geopolitical tensions and extreme weather events, disrupted global supply chains and triggered crises in the energy and food sectors,» it said. The global economy posted a real growth rate of 3.33 percent in 2023. India's economy recorded 7.61 percent growth in 2022-23, 9.19 per cent in 2023-24, and 6.48 per cent in 2024-25. «Building on a strong foundation of inclusive policies, Tamil Nadu has demonstrated remarkable economic resilience, consistently achieving growth rates of 8 per cent or more since 2021-22, and the state is expected to maintain a growth rate above 8 per cent in 2024-25,» it said. In 2022-23, Tamil Nadu's per capita income was Rs 2.78 lakh, 1.6 times the national average of Rs 1.69 lakh. The state consistently outpaced the national average over the years and is the fourth-largest state in per capita income.

Rahul Sharma advises stock accumulation amid market choppiness
«So, we feel that this back and forth action is what is happening in the market as of now. A) there is lack of leadership. We saw metals doing well last week, again follow-up buying is not happening in this week,» says Rahul Sharma, JM Financial Services. What do you make of the market setup? It seems like the market has been gradually recovering but a lot of volatility still persists. Rahul Sharma: So, markets are into that zone where the grind is essentially the base formation that we have spoken of in the past and we feel that it could spend some more time in this broad range with 22,700, 22,800 as the very stiff resistance at the higher side and 22,000, 21,800 being a very strong support equally on the downside.
