Cyber scams soar by 158% in 2024, Rs 452 cr stolen from accounts: Delhi Police
cyber scams by June, up from Rs 175 crore during the same period in 2023. Investigators disclosed that criminals are using more advanced methods to avoid detection and launder stolen funds. A prevalent tactic involves spreading the stolen money across multiple digital wallets, complicating efforts by law enforcement to trace the funds' origin. This swift distribution prevents authorities from targeting the original account from which the money was transferred. To further complicate matters, the criminals often withdraw the funds through multiple ATMs, further obscuring the money trail. Additionally, they exploit the bank accounts of vulnerable individuals, such as those living in poverty or with limi ted financial literacy. By offering small sums of money, they acquire access to these accounts and use them as conduits for transferring the stolen funds. “Even if the investigators follow the money trail and reach the account holder, they will never get to know who the real mastermind of the scam is. The person who allowed the use of his or her bank account get arrested,” one investigator said.

Adani row: Samyukt Kisan Morcha threatens protest in support of opposition's demand for JPC probe
Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday attacked the Centre over the Adani issue and threatened to launch a protest in support of the opposition's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against the business group. In a statement, the SKM, an umbrella organisation of several farmers' bodies, also said that protests will be held in Uttar Pradesh on December 4 against proposed privatisation of electricity sector in the state. The SKM accused the NDA government at the Centre of shielding industrialist Gautam Adani, against whom bribery allegations have been made in a US court. «The case registered against Adani Group in the USA corroborates SKM's demand of no privatisation of the electricity sector and prepaid smart meters that will impose huge exploitation of the people,» the SKM said.

US President Joe Biden saves son Hunter from possible Jail sentence ahead of Donald Trump's swearing-in. Here's how
Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter, sparing the younger Biden a possible prison sentence for federal felony gun and tax convictions and reversing his past promises not to use the extraordinary powers of the presidency for the benefit of his family, as per a report. The Democratic president had previously said he would not pardon his son or commute his sentence after convictions in the two cases in Delaware and California. The move on Sunday night comes weeks before Hunter Biden was set to receive his punishment after his trial conviction in the gun case and guilty plea on tax charges, and less than two months before President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the White House, AP reported. It caps a long-running legal saga for the younger Biden, who publicly disclosed he was under federal investigation in December 2020 — a month after his father’s 2020 victory — and casts a pall over the elder Biden's legacy.

Trump picked Patel for FBI after some aides warned it could backfire

Some of President-elect Donald Trump’s top advisers in recent weeks warned him it would be problematic to nominate Kash Patel, one of his most loyal foot soldiers, to lead the FBI, even as it became increasingly clear Trump was leaning in that direction. They cautioned that Patel not only lacked the right experience, but they feared his embrace of controversial theories could hurt his chances at Senate confirmation, people familiar with the discussions said.

Trump pick Kash Patel must prove he'll restore public faith in the FBI, a leading GOP senator says
Donald Trump's drive to upend the FBI was welcomed by Republican senators although it was not clear on Sunday how strongly members of the incoming majority party would embrace his move to install ally Kash Patel as the next director of the Justice Department's top investigative arm. Patel, a onetime national security prosecutor who is aligned with the president-elect's rhetoric about a «deep state,» «must prove to Congress he will reform & restore public trust in FBI,» said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, in line to be the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman when Republicans take control in January, in a post on X. Patel lacks the high-level legal and management experience that FBI directors, including Robert Mueller, James Comey and Christopher Wray, who now holds that job, had before their nominations. It's a 10-year term, and Trump named Wray in 2017 after firing Comey. So Trump's announcement late Saturday means Wray must either resign or be fired after Trump takes office on Jan. 20, 2025.

Did Trump’s FBI nominee Kash Patel voice his support for the Ayodhya Ram Temple?
Donald Trump, the US President-elect, has appointed Kashyap 'Kash' Patel as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This move makes Patel the second Indian-American to be included in Trump’s cabinet. Patel, a long-time Trump loyalist, has held several significant roles in the US government, including Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense and Deputy Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term. In his announcement on Truth Social, Trump praised Patel as an «exceptional lawyer, investigator, and 'America First' advocate» and emphasised his commitment to exposing corruption and upholding justice. Trump highlighted Patel's past work, which included playing a key role in debunking the «Russia, Russia, Russia» investigation and defending the Constitution. «Kash delivered remarkable service during my first term, holding positions such as Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense, Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council,» Trump wrote.
