Yediyurappa, facing POCSO case, should retire from public life, says Karnataka CM
Mysuru (Karnataka): Questioning veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa's «moral right» to demand his resignation in connection with the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment 'scam', Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday urged that the former should retire from public life as he is an accused in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case. Yediyurappa had recently demanded that Siddaramaiah has to resign before the BJP-JD(S)' protest march from Bengaluru against the MUDA site allotment 'scam' reaches Mysuru. The week-long Bengaluru-Mysuru padayatre (foot march) has sought to highlight the alleged fraudulent allotment of sites to land losers by MUDA, including to Siddaramaiah's wife Parvathi. «Yediyurappa has been accused in a POCSO case, chargesheet has been filed. Because of the court's mercy he is outside and not in jail. One cannot get bail in such cases,» Siddaramaiah said. Addressing reporters here, he said, «What moral right does Yediyurappa have? At this age he is caught in a POCSO case...He should retire from public life. At 81 years of age he is accused of sexually assaulting a girl and is caught in a POCSO case… First let him retire from public life. There should be truth (in allegations against me) to seek my resignation.»

Coaching centre deaths: SC takes suo motu cognisance, issues notices to Centre, Delhi govt
Supreme Court on Monday took suo motu cognisance of the deaths of three civil services aspirants in the basement of a coaching centre here and sought responses from the Centre and the Delhi government. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan said the recent incident in the national capital was an eye-opener for all. «These places (coaching centres) have become death chambers. Coaching institutes can operate online unless there is full compliance of the safety norms and basic norms for a dignified life. Coaching centres are playing with the lives of aspirants who come from different parts of the country,» the bench said. On Friday, the Delhi High Court transferred the probe into the deaths of the three students at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar from the city police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) «to ensure the public has no doubt over the investigation».

Delhi High Court assigns special CBI court to speed up trial in biggest bank fraud
Delhi High Court has designated a special CBI Court to expedite the trial of India's biggest bank fraud. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged Dheeraj Wadhawan, Kapil Wadhawan-promoters of embattled Dewan Housing Finance Ltd (DHFL)-and several others in the alleged loan fraud of Rs 34,614 crore. The orders of the Delhi High Court designating a special CBI Judge to exclusively deal with the DHFL case were received on August 1. It is pertinent to mention that considering the gravity of the case and the enormous amount of documents filed by the CBI, number of accused and hundreds of witnesses involved, a special CBI Court had written to the High Court. In April this year, a special CBI Court had shared the information of the case with the High Court with a request to designate «one special court for doing this matter only». Special CBI Judge Ashwani Kumar Sarpal, in a judicial order passed on April 27, had highlighted the fact that the documents filed by the CBI run into over 330,000 pages and are kept in 26 trunks.

Swati Maliwal assault case: Bibhav Kumar's arrest necessary as per law, says Delhi HC
Kejriwal's close aide Bibhav Kumar in a case concerning alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal was «necessary» and police strictly followed the law while doing so, the Delhi High Court has said. The court, which on Friday dismissed Kumar's petition that claimed his arrest was illegal, said in its written judgment that there was no merit in his plea. Kumar, currently in judicial custody, allegedly assaulted Maliwal at Kejriwal's official residence on May 13. He was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 18. In his plea, Kumar had sought a direction to declare his arrest as illegal and in gross violation of the provisions of section 41A (notice of appearance before police officer) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and against the mandate of the law.
