National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought a reply from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and others in a matter regarding the use of cancer-causing chemicals in cars. The tribunal was hearing a matter where it had taken suo motu (on its own) cognisance of a media report regarding the use of two flame retardant chemicals inside cars — - TDCIPP and TCEP — - which were carcinogenic. In an order passed last week, a bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted the reply of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) that it did not have the facilities to test whether these substances were carcinogenic. The bench, also comprising judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had filed a report dated September 10 where it did not take a «definite stand» on whether these chemicals were carcinogenic.

They were demanding justice for the victim and stronger security measures in medical establishments. «As a gesture of goodwill, the doctors should consider calling off the strike and work collaboratively with the West Bengal government to serve the needs of the people and expedite the implementation of the task force's initiatives to ensure these changes are promptly executed,» Banerjee said. The TMC national general secretary also said it is crucial to hold the CBI accountable and ensure no perpetrators are spared, with swift punishment handed down at the earliest opportunity.

"...This is the fifth and final time we are reaching out to you for a meeting between the Honourable Chief Minister and your delegates," the Chief Secretary writes in his letter, adding «In view of the Honourable Supreme Court order dated 9th September 2024, directing junior doctors to resume duties by 5 PM on the 10th September 2024, it is our bounden duty, as law-abiding citizens, to follow and adhere to the apex court's directive.» The junior doctors have been stressing on a five-point demand from the beginning of the protest. The demands include the resignation of the Commissioner of Police, Director of Medical Education (DME), Health Secretary and justice of RG Kar deceased PGT doctor who were brutally raped and murdered on August 9. Following the letter, junior doctors are holding general Body meetings.

Around 1 lakh advocates get enrolled every year. There are about 15 lakh advocates enrolled by the bar council. Advocates not only need to argue these cases but also have to man the courts as judges and members of tribunals. Hence, there is huge opportunity waiting for you,» Justice Khanna said. «Emerging areas like technology and artificial intelligence, data creation and data analysis, proportionality are important for legislative and executive policy as well as judicial determination,» he said, adding law cannot be understood in isolation and would need interdisciplinary study. The legal profession is not a business but one that demands integrity, perseverance and a deep sense of responsibility, with the main aim being to maintain ethics, honour and dignity, he asserted.
