Gujarat has rolled out a dedicated policy for the semiconductor sector and chip manufacturing will commence soon in the state, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said on Friday, assuring that his government will provide necessary assistance to the industry. Patel was speaking after inaugurating the daylong 'Gujarat SemiConnect Conference 2024', covering various avenues of the semiconductor sector, at the Mahatma Mandir convention centre here. Micron Technology, Tata Electronics and CG Power, which are building their semiconductor plants in Gujarat, have collaborated with the state government as knowledge partners for the conference. Semiconductors, also referred to as integrated circuits or microchips, are an essential component of electronic devices, facilitating communications, military systems, healthcare, computing, transportation, clean energy, and several other applications.

Micron was the first major company to sign up for the Indian government’s $1 billion Indian Semiconductor Mission when it announced a chip assembly plant in Gujarat last year at an overall investment of $2.75 billion. The firm, which builds memory products and is currently riding a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)-led boom, having seen its market cap rise about 117% in the past year to $145.92 billion. Its chief business officer, Sumit Sadana, told ET in an interview that the company hopes to start the India facility by 2025 which will complement some part of its global sales given its AI led products are sold out till 2025. He also spoke about whether the exorbitant cost of AI products will come down, productivity gains, investing in India’s startup ecosystem and more. DRDO on Wednesday handed over to the Indian Navy a niche technology that obscures radar signals and creates a microwave shield around platforms and assets, thus reducing radar detection, the defence ministry said. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over the Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR) to the Navy at a ceremony here. «Microwave Obscurant Chaff (MOC), a niche technology developed by DRDO's Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur, obscures radar signals and creates a microwave shield around platforms and assets, thus reducing radar detection,» the ministry said in a statement. A special type of fibres with a diameter of a few microns and unique microwave obscuration properties have been assembled in the medium-range chaff rocket. When fired, the rocket forms microwave obscurant clouds in space spreading over a sufficient area with adequate persistence time, thus creating an effective shield against threats having radio frequency seekers, it said.
