Madan Sabnavis: Can India’s economy count on manufacturing as an engine of growth?
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. The decade ending 2023-24 shows an interesting trend of a distinct decline in the contribution of manufacturing to India’s overall story of economic growth. While it may not exactly be called ‘de-industrialization,’ given the high level of sophistication we have reached in terms of the spread and quality of products, a grand shift to services is discernible and may prove quite challenging to reverse.

Google buys cybersecurity firm Wiz for $32 billion: Here are other big acquisitions by Alphabet
Alphabet will be acquiring cybersecurity startup Wiz for $32 billion. This is Alphabet’s largest-ever deal as it seeks to enhance cloud computing security. The price of the acquisition, announced on Tuesday, is significantly higher than the $23 billion Google had initially offered for Wiz in 2023. The all-cash acquisition is expected to strengthen Google Cloud’s security capabilities against rivals Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. The 2023 deal had fallen through over antitrust concerns. This led the cybersecurity startup to shift its focus towards an initial public offering (IPO) and boosting recurring revenue. However, with shifting regulatory policies and Wall Street’s optimism about a more business-friendly environment under Donald Trump, Google successfully revived and completed the deal.

India's electronics manufacturing sector grapples with uncertainty over Trump's tariff threat
US recession. A raging tariff war. Supply chains in disarray. Companies grappling with uncertainty. Governments on tenterhooks. It hasn't even been two months since Donald Trump was sworn in as US President and it has been more dramatic than an episode of his reality show The Apprentice. On March 5, Trump underlined this with his plan forreciprocal tariffs on countries such as India and China. “Whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them. That’s reciprocal, back and forth,” Trump said in his first address to the joint session of Congress.
