Being a workaholic does not help your career
Journal Of Occupational Health Psychology, which included 139 full-time employees in Italy, concluded that most workaholic employees are unhappy with their life both outside and inside the office, as compared to those who stepped back from work from time to time. There’s enough research to show that millennials (typically those born between 1981 and 1996) forfeit time off for several reasons, from being afraid of their superiors, to constantly worrying about maintaining a pristine reputation before their bosses.

foreign policy today affects every citizen, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that if India had not been clear on the Russia-Ukraine war, petrol price would have gone up. Highlighting the pressure and the problems India faced, Jaishankar said, «Look at one example. We had this pressure on Russia and Ukraine. We were clear. Suppose we had not been clear. Suppose we had said. Sorry. Sorry. You are saying it very strongly. We will not do what we did. Your petrol price would have gone up by Rs 20 because of that.» «We take a stand on foreign policy for average citizens,» he said during an interactive session in Odisha's Cuttack.

Red River by Somnath Batabyal: The past is alive, and not a foreign country
Red River, tells an expansive story set in an Assam shattered by insurgency and anti-Bengali protests, where ordinary lives are upturned by cruel sleights of hand. It is a familiar theme explored by many writers, from Indira Goswami to Aruni Kashyap, in Assamese as well as English, but Batabyal brings freshness to the well-worn subject through his gift of characterisation and storytelling. Red River takes the reader back in time when separatist movements held a death grip over Assam, opposing the demographic composition of the state.

"Why are they trying to appease Pakistan?": Milind Deora slams Congress' Wadettiwar over his "Hemant Karkare not killed by terrorists" remarks
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar stoked controversy by claiming that former ATS chief Hemant Karkare was «not killed by terrorists during the 26/11 attack but by a police official close to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh», Shiv Sena leader Milind Deora said that such remarks made by Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly are shameful and the opposition party is busy giving «clean chit to the Pakistan». «It is a very shameful statement. During the 26/11 attack. I saw the pain, suffering and terror that the people of South Mumbai, Maharashtra and India had to witness. Why are they trying to appease Pakistan and blame one community? As an Indian, a responsible leader from an Opposition party is making this statement for the second time from the same party and giving a clean chit to Pakistan,» Milind Deora told ANI. After the outrage, Vijay Wadettiwar issued a clarification, saying that these are not his words and it has been mentioned in the book authored by SM Mushrif, a former Inspector General of Police, Maharashtra.

Karnataka: Complaint against BJP leaders for posting video "intimidating" SC/STs not to vote for Congress
Congress has filed a complaint to the Election Commission against BJP national president JP Nadda, social media in-charge Amit Malviya, and state chief BY Vijayendra for allegedly posting a video on social media aimed at «intimidating» members of Schedule Caste/ Schedule Tribe to not vote for Congress in the Lok Sabha polls. In a complaint filed to the Chief Electoral Officer in Bengaluru, the party also alleged the violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by using animated videos of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah by portraying the Congress party as favouring a particular religion (Muslims) and suppressing members of SC/STs and OBC communities, with the intention to create feelings of enmity, hatred and ill-will against members of the SC/ST community. Ramesh Babu, Chairman, Media and Communication of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), said in the complaint, "… the tenor of video… is in nature of intimidating persons belonging to SC/ST Community that leaders of Congress party are likely to favour Muslims at cost of SC/ST Community. Since, elections to Lok Sabha is being held on 07/05/2024 in 14 constituencies, the video post of BJP on their official social media handle is nothing but intimidating SC/ST community not to cast a vote to Congress. This is a clear case of intimidating SC/ST community members and further projecting SC/ST community people in a bad light showing them as 'Eggs' and being kicked by another religion i.e., Muslims."

"I am a politician, not a servant of Gandhi family": Congress' Amethi candidate KL Sharma responds to BJP's 'peon' jibe
Amethi candidate KL Sharma on Sunday said he was a 'pure politician' and not a servant of the family, adding that Union Minister Smriti Irani, who holds the seat currently, will be defeated in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to on Sunday, the Congress leader said, «It was a decision taken by the party high command. Nobody had been finalised as a candidate for this seat earlier. However, I can say with full confidence and conviction that I will defeat Smriti Irani. This is a big statement I am making today. 'Mai koi Naukri nahi kar raha Gandhi Parivar ki' (I am not a servant of Gandhi family here). I am a seasoned politician and have been so for many years now. I came here in 1983 through my association with the Youth Congress. I am not on the payroll of the Congress. I am a pure politician.» On the BJP's increased vote share in Amethi and Raebareli in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Sharma said it was a pass muster at distracting public attention from the 'real' issues and that is what they have been doing over the last 10 years in power at the Centre.

Courts should not act as 'mere tape recorders', says SC; flags role of public prosecutors
Courts have to take a participatory role in a trial and not act as «mere tape recorders», the Supreme Court said here and lamented that there is «practically no effective and meaningful cross-examination» by public prosecutors of any hostile witness during hearings of criminal appeals. The apex court said a judge has to monitor the proceedings in aid of justice and, even if the prosecutor is remiss or lethargic in some ways, the court should control the proceedings effectively so that the truth is arrived at. Observing that relations between the public prosecution service and the judiciary are the very cornerstone of the criminal justice system, a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said time and again, the top court has said that there should not be any element of political consideration in matters like appointment to post of public prosecutor etc. The observations by the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, came in a judgement while upholding the conviction and life sentence awarded to a man for murdering his wife in 1995.

Filmed theatre - to be or not to be? In this case, 'to be' is not in question
Filmed theatre — the recording and subsequent screening of a live stage production — isn't to many tastes. it usually has neither the immediacy of a good play nor the visual brio of a good film. I've been wary of the form ever since my school showed us an astonishingly dull 'film' of The Merchant of Venice, which felt like it was created by having a stationary camera placed in the first row at a theatre. And yet, I loved a recent screening of The Motive and the Cue, Jack Thorne's play about the inter-generational clashes between two major British actors, John Gielgud and Richard Burton, during a 1964 Hamlet production in which the former directed the latter. One reason for this is that I'm a Hamlet nut, and have some interest in the real-life figures depicted here (especially Gielgud, superbly played by Mark Gatiss, but also Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who were newly-weds at the time). To appreciate this play, you need that interest. But even otherwise, M&C didn't feel static.

India not xenophobic, but one of the most welcoming nations: S Jaishankar
NEW DELHI: External affairs Minister S Jaishankar rejected US President Joe Biden’s description of India as “xenophobic” and grouping it with countries said to be economically troubled. “First of all, our economy is not faltering,” he said at the ET Roundtable on Friday. “India is always… India has been a very unique country… I would say actually, in the history of the world, that it's been a society which has been very open… different people from different societies come to India." Jaishankar also cited the Narendra Modi government’s legislation that facilitates such a welcome. “That's why we have the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), which is to open up doors for people who are in trouble… I think we should be open to people who have the need to come to India, who have a claim to come to India.”

Amid sizzling India and no rain, why Delhi is still not feeling the heatwave? Here's why
Delhi, known for its scorching summers, has surprisingly remained below 40 degrees Celsius, except for one day, despite severe heatwave conditions gripping parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that strong winds and cloudy skies due to five western disturbances in April have kept the temperature in check. Meteorologists attribute the absence of extreme heatwaves in Delhi to these weather patterns, which have prevailed since the third week of April. Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist at the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, IMD, explained, «April this year saw five western disturbances. No significant amount of rainfall was recorded due to these western disturbances, but there was cloudiness and strong winds on many days, which prevented a rise in temperature.»
