(Reuters) — Chipmaker NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI) forecast fourth-quarter profit above Wall Street targets on Monday, expecting a resilient automotive market and stable industrial demand to offset weakness in other key markets.

These glasses are expected to rival Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, which enable users to interact with their environment through AI. Leaks have previously indicated that Samsung's XR glasses could weigh around 50 grams, feature multiple cameras, and support capabilities such as payments, gestures, and facial recognition. The smart glasses are likely to be powered by a Qualcomm chipset, with an NXP chip serving as an auxiliary processing unit. They could also include a 12-megapixel camera with a Sony IMX681 CMOS image sensor. Additionally, according to a report from SamMobile, the glasses may come with a 155mAh battery and incorporate Google's Gemini AI model to enhance the user experience with AI-driven features.

NXP Semiconductors plans to invest over USD 1 billion to double its research and development activities in India over the next few years, a top company official said on Wednesday. Speaking at Semicon India 2024, NXP Executive Director, President and CEO Kurt Sievers said the company is engaging with the whole industry, downstream in the automotive sector, industrial sector, which is going to make India extremely powerful as an economy. «In that context, NXP is committed to double its R&D efforts here in the country in the next few years, which is far in excess of a billion dollars,» he said. Sievers said NXP has been present in India for about 50 years.

World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 13th ministerial conference to refrain from extending a moratorium on imposing customs duties on electronic transmissions would impact the semiconductor design ecosystem in India, industry bodies told ET. The moratorium expires in February-March this year. WTO members had agreed against imposing customs duties on electronic transmissions since 1998 and the moratorium has been periodically extended at successive ministerial conferences, which is the highest decision-making body of the 164-member organisation.

NEW DELHI : NXP Semiconductors, founded as a division of Royal Philips NV, is open to setting up a fabrication unit in India, subject to the development of a suitable ecosystem in the country, said Hitesh Garg, vice-president and India country manager. “If there is an ecosystem developed here, we will support the ecosystem. We will make sure that we are doing the manufacturing of our chips which are possible to be done here in India," Garg said, reiterating views expressed by NXP chief executive officer Kurt Sievers, who was in India earlier this year and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

GANDHINAGAR : The Union government is evaluating a proposal to include large multinational companies in India’s $200 million design-linked incentive (DLI) scheme if they were designing chips in the country, said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for electronics and information technology (IT). The scheme is currently limited to startups. Under the scheme, seven startups have been given approvals for claiming incentives.
