Ahead of IOC election, 350 Olympians urge candidates to make climate action top priority
Saina Nehwal and PR Sreejesh, have written a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential candidates, urging them to make climate action their top priority. As IOC members gather in Costa Navarino, Greece, to vote on the seven candidates next week (March 18-21), the Olympians called for stronger commitments from the IOC to cut carbon emissions, promote sustainability in host cities, set clear guidelines on polluting sponsors and use its platform to advocate for climate action. Climate impacts are «no longer a distant threat, but a current and growing harm to the sports we love and to the countries that make up our Olympic family», the letter said. The signatories include 57 Olympic champions and over 100 Olympic flag bearers. They represent some of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, including Argentina, Aruba, the Bahamas, Cabo Verde, Colombia, Cook Islands, Eswatini, Fiji, Ghana, India, Kenya, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Sierra Leone and Zambia. Recognizing that extreme weather events are already disrupting the Summer and Winter Olympics and affecting athlete performance and safety, the letter urges decisive action to ensure the games remain accessible and safe for future generations. Earlier this year, massive wildfires burned large areas of Los Angeles, the host city of the 2028 Olympic Games. The fires killed about 30 people, destroyed thousands of buildings, and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.

Wrestlers free to challenge Centre revoking WFI suspension: Delhi HC
Delhi High Court on Tuesday said Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik among others could challenge the Centre revoking the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela also requested the single judge, hearing the wrestlers' plea against the 2023 WFI election, to expedite the proceedings. The Centre on March 10 revoked its order suspending the WFI on December 24, 2023 for lapses in governance and procedural integrity by the new body, elected on December 21, the same year, and restored its status as a national sports federation. The bench, while closing the proceedings on WFI's appeal against the single judge's order on restoring Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) ad-hoc committee to run its affairs, observed the committee had to work only till the Centre's suspension was in force. Referring to the March 10 decision, the court observed nothing remained to be adjudicated in the WFI appeal. «Needless to state, it will be open to any party, if aggrieved by the order dated March 10 passed by the sports ministry, to challenge the same before appropriate court,» it said.

Beware of Mohalla Majoritarianism
Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, parents of a 15-year-old boy were arrested after complaints that the teenager was spouting 'anti-national' slogans during last weekend's India-Pakistan cricket match. The parents were granted bail by the local court, and have been asked not to leave the area. The family's scrap shop — which allegedly didn't have the right permit and was left intact until Monday — was razed by the local council. From when was it a crime to cheer for a cricket team pitted against India, a Pakistani team included? What next? Arresting for listening to Pakistani ghazals? For having a poster of 2024 Paris Olympic gold medal-winning Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem — and pal of India's 2023 World Champion Neeraj Chopra — on a wall? If the police had one job, it was to quell the escalating argument between the boy's family and the complainants, not, for all purposes, join the mob.
