MVA set to get majority, says Balasaheb Thorat; signals CM ambitions
Balasaheb Thorat has asserted that the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will win a clear majority and also indicated his chief ministerial aspirations. In an exclusive interview to PTI ahead of the November 20 state assembly polls, Thorat (71) said he is among the few senior leaders in the MVA after NCP (SP) head Sharad Pawar and enjoys cordial relations with leaders of the alliance. Thorat's assertion has come at a time when the ruling Mahayuti coalition has been reluctant to declare incumbent Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the next CM, with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis saying a decision on it will be taken after the poll results are announced. «I am among the senior leaders in the MVA after Sharad Pawar,» Thorat, an eight-term MLA from Sangamner in Ahilyanagar district, told PTI when asked whether he saw himself as an acceptable face of the opposition alliance.

What can the Department of Government Efficiency do?
Donald Trump announced this past week was an unusual appointment: Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency. While Trump has not detailed how the entity will operate, he said in a statement that it would «slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure federal agencies» and «provide advice and guidance from outside of government.» Conventionally, what outsiders can do in the government has been pretty limited. But with Trump and Musk both known for pushing boundaries, it's not clear what «DOGE» will look like.

Pentagon has released a fresh report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs), commonly referred to as UFOs. While it details hundreds of new incidents, the report does not provide any proof of extraterrestrial origins. Compiled by the Pentagon’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the review examines cases involving objects ranging from misidentified balloons and drones to more mysterious sightings. One notable case involved a near-miss between a commercial aeroplane and an unidentified object off New York’s coast.

G20 role in climate finance critical: UN body chief
UN climate chief Simon Stiell on Saturday urged them to send a strong signal that climate action is core business for the world's biggest economies and step up climate finance globally as it requires action both inside and outside the COP process. His remarks come as negotiators here continue to brainstorm on finalising post-2025 climate finance goals without making much headway on the latest iteration of the draft decision text during multiple negotiations at CO. It is believed that the leaders' declaration by G20 leaders at Rio may give a push to the ongoing negotiation here. «Here in Baku negotiators are working around the clock on a new climate finance goal. There is a long way to go, but everyone is very aware of the stakes, at the halfway point in the COP. Climate finance progress outside of our process is equally crucial, and the G20's role is mission-critical,» said Stiell.
