Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is expanding its avatar system with the introduction of new features that allow users to participate in video calls as their virtual animated avatars. In a blog post, the company announced this significant update, signalling its continued efforts towards building a metaverse. Users will now have the option to use their Meta avatars during video calls on Facebook Messenger and Instagram. The avatar feature from Meta resembles Apple's Memoji avatars on FaceTime calls. These avatars mimic facial expressions and mouth movements to enhance communication. Users can make their avatars perform actions such as giving a thumbs up or rolling on the floor laughing, bringing more personality and emotion to their virtual interactions. Meta says the new functionality will allow users to take part in video calls in instances where they’re not camera-ready.
