Multi-billion fund involving Brookfield, Ottawa and major pensions being discussed, sources say
The creation of a multi-billion-dollar investment fund seeded with federal government money and designed to attract additional investments from Canada’s large pension plans is among ideas put forward as former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz pursues his mandate to help Ottawa find ways to direct pension billions into the Canadian economy, according to two sources with knowledge of the proposal.

Ottawa to expand 30-year amortizations, raise insured mortgage cap
mortgage market, expanding the availability of 30-year amortizations and raising the cap on insured mortgage products.First-time homebuyers, as well as those purchasing new builds, will soon be able to take out insured mortgages with a 30-year amortization, up from the typical 25-year payback period.Additionally, the Liberals are raising the price cap for taking out insured mortgages to $1.5 million compared with the previous bar of $1 million. Both proposed changes would go into effect on Dec. 15.Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland made the announcements on Monday in Ottawa where members of Parliament are reconvening for the start of the fall sitting in the House of Commons. She positioned the move as helping Canadians to afford a first home.“It is going to put the dream of home ownership in reach for more young Canadians,” she told reporters.Extending amortizations helps to reduce the monthly burden of carrying a mortgage, though a homeowner is likely to pay more in interest over the life of the loan.Because households have to put down more than 20 per cent upfront when purchasing a home with an uninsured mortgage, the current price cap for insured mortgages creates a significant barrier for Canadians looking to purchase a property worth more than $1 million. In some of Canada’s most expensive housing markets, the average home price is already above that bar, making it difficult for some prospective buyers to save enough to ever own a home.Under the proposed changes, an individual could put down between five and 20 per cent of the value of a home worth up to $1.5 million, lowering the size of the down payment needed. The proposals come after the Liberals instituted new changes as of Aug.

Micro SIP of Rs.250 a month is a good step but here are the challenges
As an observer of financial markets, I see this as a positive development in our gradual progress towards wider financial inclusion. The Rs.250 SIP potentially opens the doors for many Indians who have previously been unable to participate in mutual fund investments. By lowering the entry barrier, Sebi invites a broader segment of our population to consider mutual funds as an investment option. This initiative aligns with one of the key objectives of mutual funds, particularly in the Indian context—to make a range of stocks and bonds accessible, with relatively small amounts of money. Mutual funds pool investments from numerous individuals, allowing them to access a diverse portfolio of securities that might otherwise be challenging for individual investors to compose independently. The Rs.250 SIP extends this concept further, potentially bringing professional fund management and diversified portfolios within the reach of more people.

VC bigwigs breaking away to start anew struggle to raise funds
who have left venture capital firms in the past year to start off on their own are finding it hard to raise capital as they struggle to convince investors who currently favour the public markets that fetch them higher returns. “LPs (limited partners) are very satisfied at this moment with the delivery of returns that are taking place in the public markets," said Sanjay Nayar, former CEO of KKR India, who retired to start his own early-stage fund, Sorin Investments, which closed its maiden fund in May.

Some PE, VC investors more equal than others? Sebi seeks to find out
private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) investors more equal than others? The capital market regulator has asked several funds to reveal the names of investors who have been offered beneficial terms by the funds and have representation on the funds' investment committees. Many PE and VCs — or, alternative investment funds (AIFs), the regulatory term for such pooled vehicles — have been told to spell out the details of these differential rights given to certain investors. In a communique to many AIFs about a week ago, the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) asked fund managements to submit documents like 'side letters' and 'contribution agreements' that provide special rights to investors. The regulator may compare a side letter, which is an agreement between a fund house and some investors, providing rights and obligations which are outside the standard investment document, with the fund's private placement memorandum (PPM) — the disclosure document used for fund raising through private offering.

The Indian Double League: Power play revenues of top IPL franchises rise 2x in FY24
Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises more than doubled their revenues for the year ended March 2024, with significant improvements in profitability, largely on the back of increased share from the league’s central revenue pool during IPL 2023. The 10 teams collectively received Rs 4,670 crore from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the IPL 2023 compared to Rs 2,205-crore share from the central pool for the IPL 2022, as per BCCI’s annual report for FY23. “The first eight IPL franchisees have been profitable for more than eight years now and their profits have significantly increased in FY24, and are expected to be at that level going forward due to the media rights renewal in 2022 and the resulting increase in the central pool,” D and P Advisory managing partner Santosh N said.
