India's weekly vegetable spending up in the past few weeks, says survey
vegetable spending has increased by 25-100% in the last few weeks due to higher prices. Within the last week alone, per kilogram price paid for tomatoes by 2 in 3 consumers has risen from Rs 30 or more to Rs 50 or more. In some states, it has crossed Rs 100/kg. If the monsoon does not deliver better than normal rains during July, when most of the sowing is done in rain-fed areas, or if it rains too much where vegetables are grown, the situation is likely to worsen as far as vegetable supplies and prices are concerned. Local authorities may need to step in to prevent profiteering and the Department of Consumer Affairs may need to intervene via NCCF in making these vegetables available at subsidized prices in districts that are currently experiencing abnormally higher prices, the survey added.

Don't leave your crease: ICICI Bank asks UPI users to follow cricket strategy to stay safe from frauds
ICICI Bank has issued a crucial advisory regarding the growing threat of fake UPI payment scams, disseminating the warning through its official social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Alongside the alert, the bank shared a concise instructional video aimed at educating users on how to identify and prevent these scams effectively. In the video, ICICI Bank emphasizes the importance of cautiousness and urges customers not to react impulsively to unexpected UPI payment notifications. The bank advises recipients to carefully verify the received amount before taking any action, as scammers often manipulate figures to deceive users into transferring more money back than they received. According to ICICI Bank's advisory, scammers typically initiate contact with potential victims, claiming to have mistakenly transferred a larger sum via UPI than intended. They then pressure the victim to urgently return the excess amount, exploiting urgency to prevent careful scrutiny of transaction details.

NC MP Mehdi urges Speaker to restrain members from making disparaging remarks
Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the newly-elected MP from Srinagar, on Wednesday urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to ensure the sanctity of the House by restraining members from making disparaging remarks or rushing legislations like the abrogation of Article 370. In his two-minute inaugural address after Birla was elected Speaker, the National Conference member made a passionate appeal and emphasised, «I would request you that from today you are neither BJP nor Congress or Samajwadi, and you have only one party, and that is the Constitution of India.» He expressed hope that the Speaker would uphold the Constitution and lead the house as a beacon of democracy. Mehdi cryptically alluded to the Speaker's legacy, stating that his actions in handling both the government and opposition voices would define his tenure.

Judge was in hurry, didn't give prosecutor opportunity to oppose Kejriwal's bail: ED to SC
ED on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the trial court judge was in a «hurry» and did not afford a reasonable opportunity to the prosecutor to oppose Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bail in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise scam. The federal probe agency said the June 20 order of the trial court granting regular bail to Kejriwal was «perverse» for non-compliance of prerequisite mandatory conditions under section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). A vacation bench of Justice Manoj Misra and Justice SVN Bhatti took on record the Enforcement Directorate's reply affidavit filed in Kejriwal's plea challenging the interim stay granted by the Delhi High Court on June 21. The bench also allowed Kejriwal to withdraw his plea after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for him, said he would file a substantial appeal as the high court has pronounced the final order on June 25, staying the bail order.
