Taking relentless action on wilful defaulters: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman Wednesday said «relentless action» is going on against wilful bank defaulters and that loan write-offs do not mean waivers as borrowers remain liable to repay their dues. «Banks continue to pursue recovery actions in written-off accounts using various mechanisms,» she said, responding to the discussion on Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the Rajya Sabha. The upper house, subsequently, gave its nod to the bill that seeks to provide options to the depositors for either successive or simultaneous nominations besides allowing public sector banks (PSBs) to transfer unclaimed shares, interest, and bond redemption amounts to investor protection fund besides other changes. The bill has already secured Lok Sabha's nod.

Zypp Electric lays off 10% of workforce amid profitability push
Zypp Electric has reduced its workforce by around 10% over the past two months as it works toward profitability ahead of a potential public listing. In January, the company had around 1,300 employees, which has now come down to around 1,180-1,190, according to a statement from the company. “Basically, this was not a layoff. We conducted an appraisal exercise in February, during which we looked at some rationalisation of non-performers to drive efficiency. This is part of a sustainable, profitable growth plan. As you build a business, you keep looking at its structure, and wherever some rationalisation is needed to enhance profitability and growth, you make those adjustments. That is what we continue to do,” he said.

Misleading Ads case: SC directs states to set up grievance mechanism for misleading medical ads, warns of strict action
Supreme Court on Wednesday directed all states and union territories to set up a grievance redressal mechanism for addressing complaints against misleading advertisements that «can cause great harm to society.” A Bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said that the 1954 Act against misleading advertisements of medicinal or other such products is more than 70 years old, it is yet to be properly implemented in its „letter and spirit“. It asked the state governments to create grievance redressal mechanisms in two months so that members of the public can lodge complaints about the objectionable advertisements prohibited under the Act, the court said, adding the grievance mechanism may provide for making complaints either on a toll free number or by email. “As soon as complaints are received, the same shall be immediately forwarded to the concerned officers to take action under the said provision. If the officer finds that there is a contravention, he shall lodge a complaint with the jurisdictional police station so that FIR is registered and criminal law is set in motion,” the court said. It asked the states to appoint in one month an adequate number of gazetted officers that have the power to search and seize any advertisements which have contravened provisions of the 1954 Act, which prohibits misleading advertisements.
