Airtel working on tech to wipe out scam, phishing
Bharti Airtel is working on a technology that will aim to eradicate online scam or phishing attempts through text messaging and calls for its more than 380 million mobile users, said a top official at India's second-largest telecom operator. The service, when ready, will prevent scamsters from misusing one-time passwords (OTPs) and online links, the official said. «We have not yet found the solution, but we are about 80% there. Once we crack a solution, there will be no fraud on the Airtel network,» the official said on condition of anonymity. The official, however, lamented that the proposed technology won't work on over-the-top (OTT) apps, which is «not right» for consumers, and called on the government and telecom regulator to bring OTT communication apps under the regulatory framework to check the menace.

Vodafone Idea fails to submit Rs 6,090 crore bank guarantee or Rs 5,493 crore cash to DoT
Vodafone Idea has not submitted a bank guarantee (BG) worth ₹6,090.7 crore or made a cash payment of ₹5,493.2 crore to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for shortfall of the 2015 spectrum auction by the deadline, a development that may lead to some sort of action by the government. The financially struggling company was scheduled to submit the BG or cash payment by March 10, 2025, but the company failed to do either at the end of office hours. «We will see what action can be taken in the coming couple of days,» an official privy to the details told ET. The DoT has so far not granted any extension, the official added. The amount must be paid by Vodafone Idea for the shortfall in payments for spectrum use on a pro-rata basis as per the terms and conditions of the BG waiver announced by the DoT in December last year.

Fitch assigns Negative Outlook to Adani Energy, cites US probe risks
Fitch Ratings has removed energy infrastructure company Adani Energy Solutions (AESL) from its 'Ratings Watch Negative' list and assigned a Negative Outlook, it said in a statement on Monday. The agency cited concerns over ongoing US investigations that could reveal governance weaknesses and affect financial stability. The agency warned that the outcome of the probe could impact the company's credit profile. It had affirmed the long-term foreign- and local-currency issuer default ratings at 'BBB-'. «The risks associated with the group's liquidity and funding requirements have moderated,» Fitch said in a statement, adding that the proceedings and outcome of the US investigations could reveal that the group's corporate governance practices are weaker than it expected, potentially leading to negative rating action in the near to medium term.

Oppn walks out of Rajya Sabha as chair refuses discussion on delimitation, EPIC issues
In the absence of Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had fallen sick and was admitted to AIIMS on Saturday, Deputy Chairman Harivansh chaired the proceedings on Monday. Soon after the Upper House met for the day, the Deputy Chairman said he has received notices under Rule 267 to suspend the listed business and discuss other issues. Congress MP Ajay Maken had given a notice for discussing the acknowledgement by the Election Commission of India on March 7, 2025, of the existence of duplicate EPIC numbers. In his notice, he said this revelation «casts serious doubt on the free and free nature of our electoral process and democracy» as the loopholes enable individuals to possess multiple EPICs in different states and constituencies. Maken also wanted the matter of sudden and unjustified surges in the number of electors immediately before elections, and abrupt and unwarranted deletion of voters «belonging to specific communities or religious groups», to be debated.

Faceless killers
He tries to remember. But sleep is like a black hole. A well that reveals nothing of its contents. At least I didn't dream about the bulls, he thinks. Then I would have been hot and sweaty, as if I had suffered through a fever during the night. This time the bulls left me in peace. He lies still in the darkness and listens. His wife's breathing at his side is so faint that he can scarcely hear it. One of these mornings she'll be lying dead beside me and I won't even notice, he thinks. Or maybe it'll be me. Daybreak will reveal that one of us has been left all alone.

Duplicate voter card numbers a legacy issue: EC sources
Election Commission Monday said the matter related to duplicate voter identity card numbers is a «legacy issue» with such cards being issued even between 2008 and 2013 when the BJP-led NDA was not in power. The EC had in the past during annual electoral roll updation also been directing states to remove all discrepancies in elector photo identity card (EPIC). The poll body had recently clarified that irrespective of EPIC number, an elector can cast a vote only at their designated polling station. To allay any apprehensions, all cases of duplicate EPIC number will be resolved within three months time by ensuring a unique EPIC number to the existing electors having duplicate EPIC number and for future electors as well, the EC had said.
