How India’s booming ecommerce market is spurring a packaging makeover among FMCG companies
booming ecommerce market is spurring a packaging makeover among consumer goods makers, as they chase the growing number of online shoppers. Companies are seeking to make their products more robust to survive the rigours of shipping, with some saying they have already seen results, in the form of fewer returns. ITC, for instance, changed the cap of shower gels to prevent leakage even when there is no scotch tape. This is one among changes in the packaging design for most of its fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). Parle Products is adding protective layers for its `30-80 biscuit packs, which mostly sell online. It has also introduced a separate outer packing for bundled biscuit packs to be sold online, to ensure they are not broken. Goods sold online change hands more times than offline, often being roughly handled by delivery personnel, company executives said, adding that the chances of leaks or transit damage increase while shipping individual units.

AAP may use 'kickbacks' from Punjab excise policy in LS polls: State BJP to EC
Punjab BJP on Saturday met the state Chief Electoral Officer and pressed for an ED probe into the state excise policy, alleging «black money received by AAP through kickbacks» could be used during the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP's fresh attack on the issue came after the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a Delhi excise policy-linked money-laundering case on Thursday. However, the ruling AAP in Punjab hit back, accusing the BJP of «peddling lies» to mislead people as it will get a «zero» in Punjab in the coming Lok Sabha polls. The BJP delegation, led by Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and comprising Union minister Som Parkash, former Union minister Vijay Sampla and others, handed over a memorandum to Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C, seeking a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the state excise policy.

Congress has multiple bank accounts, just 3-4 of them attached, 'not frozen': BJP
Congress has multiple bank accounts and just three-four of them have been attached, «not frozen», for non-payment of tax dues, the BJP said Saturday, accusing the opposition party of making misleading statements on the issue sensing its «imminent» defeat in the Lok Sabha poll. «These bank accounts have not been frozen, they are operational. You (Congress) can deposit money in these accounts and withdraw too, except Rs 125 crore, which has been attached by the Income Tax department due to the non-payment of dues as per Income Tax rules,» BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said. Referring to media reports, he said the Congress has about Rs 1,000 crore in its multiple bank accounts, opened with «multiple PAN» numbers in «violation of its own party constitution». The Congress also has a fixed asset of worth Rs 500 crore, the BJP leader claimed. He said the Income Tax Department has attached three-four bank accounts of the Congress due to the non-payment of outstanding Rs 135 crore as per rules.

Mizoram MP accuses BJP leaders of trying to turn India into Hindu kingdom
NDA government, K. Vanlalvena, Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha member, on Saturday leveled a serious allegation against BJP leaders, claiming they are striving to transform India into a Hindu kingdom. Vanlalvena, who was named by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) as their nominee for the upcoming elections to the state's lone Lok Sabha seat, told reporters that the NDA is an alliance formed by various parties, not all of which share the ideologies of the BJP. «Some BJP leaders with vested interests are trying to turn the country into a Hindu kingdom. The NDA is likely to retain power at the Centre in the upcoming polls. If the NDA government takes steps, which are against the interest of the religious minorities, including Mizo Christians, I shall oppose it vociferously both within and outside Parliament,» the 54-year-old MNF leader said. However, Vanlalvena commended the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for its contributions to economic development in the country.

Karnataka approaches SC against Centre seeking release of NDRF grants to tackle drought
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the state government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a direction to the Centre to immediately release grants under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to the state, which is reeling under acute drought. Accusing the Centre of sitting on Karnataka's pleas for release of funds though there is a severe drought, he said the state government was compelled to approach the apex court. «Today the Karnataka government filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against the Centre after waiting for five months. Since there is vacation for a week in the Supreme Court, we did not get the endorsement. We expect it next week,» Siddaramaiah told reporters here. The petition was filed under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution to give directions to the Government of India to release NDR Funds immediately, which was supposed to be released by the Centre according to law, he explained.
