Donald Trump confirms 25% auto tariffs on all foreign made automobiles
Beginning April 3, the US would levy a 25% tariff on fully assembled cars from India. By May 3, similar tariffs were expected on auto parts, raising concerns in India’s auto sector, which is one of the country’s largest exporters to the US. Announced during the “Make America Wealthy Again” event, the tariffs were part of Trump’s broader "Fair and Reciprocal Plan," under which the US would impose tariffs equivalent to those levied by other nations on US goods. On March 26, Trump officially announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on foreign-made cars and auto parts. These tariffs were set to go into effect on April 2, targeting a critical sector that includes exports of fully assembled vehicles and auto components. The impact of these tariffs is particularly concerning for India.

Democrats are fighting back against President Donald Trump. Are Republicans losing ground?
Donald Trump's agenda of deep cuts and trade protectionism, as per a report. There have been successes to slow the Trump juggernaut in court, but the lack of a coherent plan in Congress has frustrated anti-Trump Americans who have been clamoring for leaders able to show some fight, AFP reported. So there was jubilation Tuesday when a Democratic-backed candidate won the controlling seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the top judicial body in one of the most closely-fought swing states. Republicans hung on to two House seats in Florida on the same night, but with leads greatly reduced from Trump's 2024 victory margins — worrying lawmakers in much more vulnerable seats ahead of next year's midterms. «Last night's results were the shot in the arm Democrats needed,» said political analyst Andrew Koneschusky, a former senior Democratic staffer in the US Senate.

Cincinnati Bengals' Executive VP Katie Blackburn unsure about retaining Trey Hendrickson, still undergoing contract talks
Cincinnati Bengals have secured long-term deals for key offensive stars like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. However, their defensive standout Trey Hendrickson’s future remains in a lurch. The Executive Vice President of Bengals, Katie Blackburn, addressed the situation during the NFL's Annual League Meeting. She stated that the team is still working through negotiations. Blackburn while speaking to the media said that the team will see how it all plays out. She acknowledged that the franchise allowed Hendrickson to seek a trade and yet no deal or contract extension has materialised, the reports stated. Hendrickson was the NFL’s reigning sack leader with 17.5 sacks last season. He, as per the reports, has been pushing for a lucrative long-term deal. But the Bengals have reportedly not met his demands yet. This has raised speculation about a possible trade before the NFL Draft 2025.

Mallory McMorrow enters Michigan Senate race, promises ‘new generation of leadership’
Mallory McMorrow has announced her candidacy for the US Senate seat, currently held by Democrat Gary Peters. Senator Peters is set to retire in 2026. The 38-year-old Democrat has become the first prominent candidate to formally enter the race. Her entry has set the stage for what is expected to be one of the most competitive and expensive senate battlers of the midterms. McMorrow, who represents a suburban Detroit district, positioned herself as a fresh alternative to the Democratic Party’s current leadership, the reports stated. The politician, in her campaign launch video, called for a ‘new generation of leadership’. She also criticised party veterans for their failure to offer a clear plan to counter President Donald Trump’s influence.

Amazon submits last-minute bid to buy TikTok, claims report
Amazon.com has put in a last-minute offer to buy short-form video app TikTok, New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Trump is slated to meet with top White House officials Wednesday to discuss TikTok's fate. People familiar with the talks have outlined a potential deal that could involve bringing on a number of new U.S. investors, including Oracle, the technology giant, and Blackstone, the private equity firm, while sidestepping a formal sale. But it isn't clear that such a structure would satisfy the conditions of the federal law, as per the report. Amazon has some existing ties to TikTok. TikTok video app, which counts 170 million users in the United States, has become a major hub of retail shopping, with influencers recommending products to viewers. While the company has its own e-commerce operation known as TikTok Shop, many influencers encourage people to buy products on Amazon, which gives the influencers a cut of the transactions. It has also provided some technical infrastructure, NYT News Service reported. Amazon had previously tried to make a TikTok clone of sorts, called Inspire, inside its own app. Internally, it was a high-profile initiative, but was widely seen as unsuccessful at attracting shoppers. The company removed it from the app this year, as per the report. Amazon isn't the first retailer to express interest in the app. In 2020, when TikTok was first pressured to sell to U.S. owners, Microsoft and Walmart made a bid for the company.

US factory orders rise solidly in February
Factory orders rose 0.6% after an upwardly revised 1.8% rebound in January, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast factory orders would climb 0.5% after a previously reported 1.7% advance in January. Factory orders gained 1.5% on a year-on-year basis in February. Manufacturing, which accounts for 10.2% of the economy, could be crippled by President Donald Trump's barrage of tariffs since returning to the White House in January. Trump promised to announce global reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday, which he has dubbed «Liberation Day.» He sees tariffs as a tool to raise revenue to offset his promised tax cuts and to revive a long-declining U.S. industrial base. Economists disagree and view the import duties as harmful. An Institute for Supply Management report on Tuesday showed its manufacturing PMI slipped back into contraction territory in March after two straight months of expansion, with businesses overwhelmingly expressing concerns about tariffs. Domestic manufacturers rely heavily on imported raw materials. The import taxes are expected to increase production costs, which are passed on to buyers of the finished products. Companies could also lay off workers to protect profit margins. Commercial aircraft orders slipped 5.0%. Orders for motor vehicles, parts and trailers increased 1.9%. Transportation equipment orders advanced 1.5%. Orders for computers and electronic products were unchanged, while those for electrical equipment, appliances and components rebounded 1.9%.

Myanmar's military declares ceasefire to ease quake relief as death toll tops 3,000
MRTV, which said the truce would run until April 22 and was aimed at showing compassion for people affected by Friday's quake. The announcement followed unilateral temporary ceasefires announced by armed resistance groups opposed to military rule. Those groups must refrain from attacking the state, or regrouping, or else the military will take «necessary» measures, the army's statement said. Earlier Wednesday, rescuers pulled two men alive from the ruins of a hotel in Myanmar's capital and a third from a guesthouse in another city, five days after the quake. But most teams were finding only bodies. The quake hit midday Friday, toppling thousands of buildings, collapsing bridges and buckling roads. The death toll rose to 3,003 on Wednesday, with more than 4,500 people injured, MRTV reported. Local reports suggest much higher figures. The earthquake came amid civil war in Myanmar, making a dire humanitarian crisis even worse. More than 3 million people had been displaced from their homes and nearly 20 million were in need even before it hit, according to the United Nations.

George Soros-linked Bengaluru firm under ED lens for getting USAID funding of Rs 8 cr
Enforcement Directorate (ED) has turned its focus on funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) amid an ongoing investigation tied to investor and philantropist George Soros, TOI has reported. This scrutiny comes as the Trump administration has time and again criticized USAID for allegedly promoting a «left, liberal and woke» agenda abroad. The ED is currently investigating three Bengaluru-based companies for purported violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, specifically regarding the receipt of Rs 25 crore from the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF). Among these companies, ASAR Social Impact Advisors has also been noted for receiving Rs 8 crore from USAID as foreign inward remittance during FY23. The central agency is particularly interested in understanding the motives and purposes behind the payments made by USAID. Notably, the Open Society Foundations was categorized under the 'prior reference category' by the home ministry in 2016 due to concerns over «undesirable activities.» This classification mandates that it must obtain prior approval from the ministry before contributing funds to any Indian non-profit organization.

Aligarh sanitation worker, earning a meager Rs 15,000, gets I-T notice to pay Rs 34 crore — and he’s not the only one
The notices, which target individuals with little to no financial capacity, expose a troubling pattern of fraud involving stolen Aadhaar and PAN card details. Among the most cases reported so far is that of Karan Kumar, a 34-year-old sanitation worker who earns a modest Rs 15,000 per month at the State Bank of India’s Khair branch. On March 29, Karan received an Income Tax notice demanding an outrageous sum of Rs 33.88 crore. This demand, based on transactions carried out using his identity, came as a complete shock. According to Karan, Mahaveer Enterprises, a company dealing in petroleum and steel goods, had been using a forged PAN and Aadhaar card linked to his name for large-scale transactions in Delhi.

Elon Musk’s costly gamble on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court backfires as voters hand him an embarrassing political defeat
Elon Musk, who spent millions opposing her. The most expensive race of its kind drew national attention, owing to Elon Musk's significant investment in Brad Schimel's campaign, which ultimately failed to sway voters. The ostensibly nonpartisan race turned into the costliest state Supreme Court race in American history, serving as the first significant battleground state election of President Donald Trump's second term. Following Crawford's win in the first battleground state election of Donald Trump's second term, liberals will continue to hold a slim majority on the court. According to NBC News, Democratic-backed Dane County circuit judge Susan Crawford defeated former Republican attorney general Brad Schimel, a Waukesha County circuit judge, to win a 10-year term on the court. Donald Trump and Elon Musk, his multibillionaire advisor, suffer as a result.
