markets UPS Citi CEO Citigroup Trade rights Morning Coffee: Bankers are busy, but bumper bonuses look unlikely. Deutsche Bank is still making big hires
Everything’s fantastic and nobody’s happy.  That seems to be the message from the bumper day of Q3 results from Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Citigroup yesterday.  All three big banks beat their earnings estimates, and credit for the beats had to be given fairly and squarely to the investment banking divisions. It would have been reasonable to conclude, as several commentators did, that “Wall Street bonuses have just been salvaged”.

markets Digital Strategy Netflix film patient rights Exploring caregiving and complexity in 'His Three Daughters' on Netflix
Netflix, Azazel Jacobs' His Three Daughters — a superbly performed chamber drama about three women looking after their dying father — a narrative shift occurs. I won't give away anything important. It's enough to say that after an hour of storytelling centred on the daughters, who are negotiating their own complicated interrelationships and personal histories, we meet the father for the first time. Before this, he has been a barely glimpsed, immobile presence on a bed in a room. Now, as they wheel him, he is only half-conscious, only just capable of posing — mechanically, through pain and discomfort — for a selfie. But he is at least recognisable as a person. And then something else happens that shifts the needle from caregivers to the patient — to his inner life and dazed thoughts, which may have nothing to do with his daughters' concerns. This is one of those risky, tone-altering devices that can take a viewer out of a film. But it fits a theme that emerged a short while earlier: the unknowability of people, or how a person's entirety can (perhaps) only be processed through his absence — as opposed to the many disconnected bits you experience at different times while he is alive. Shortly after we see the three daughters trying to find the right words for an obituary, the father stops being an abstraction for us and becomes real. We even get a hint of something about him that the protagonists didn't know.

markets Sustainability Olympics stars rights hockey Hockey India League back in business after a 7-year hiatus
Hockey India League (HIL), resurrected after seven years in cold storage, held its auctions in New Delhi last week with franchises – eight men and four women – snapping up players from across the globe. Harmanpreet Singh and Udita Duhan, current national team stars, emerged as the costliest buys at Rs 78 lakh and Rs 32 lakh in men’s and women’s leagues respectively. “It is not about the money. We are all in this for the development of the sport,” said Rahul Todi of Shrachi, owner of the Bengal Rarh Tigers franchise. While the auction was a success, there are still some lingering questions. Is the league sustainable? Can franchises make money in the long run? How will the league help the future of Indian hockey? There was already a minor setback for the organisers, Hockey India (HI); they had to reduce the number of women’s teams from six to four. However, the organisers said that the number will go back to six teams in 2026. “A lot of the current stars including Harmanpreet emerged into prominence from the Hockey India League. With back-to-back Olympic medals, there could be no better time to restart the league,” said PR Sreejesh, former India goalkeeper and Delhi SG Pipers team director, who was present for the two days of the auction before donning the hat of junior team head coach and leaving for Malaysia.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday urged the junior doctors to end their hunger strike. She added that everybody had right to protest, but it should not affect healthcare services. «Most of your demands fulfilled, give me 3-4 months more to meet the rest,» said Banerjee. She also requested the doctors to not differ with their demands, and called them to sit for talks with the government. «Please withdraw the agitation. Some of the demands need policy decisions. We will cooperate to the fullest extent possible but it is not acceptable that you will dictate to the government what should be done,» she said.

markets Target Strategy Food trends stage rights Quite risky to cut rates at this stage: RBI Guv Shaktikanta Das
interest rates right now would be hasty and potentially fraught with risk as inflation remains above target and will stay there in the near term, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Shaktikanta Das said. “Inflation is moderating, with certain risks about which we have to be very vigilant,” Das said at an event organised by Bloomberg on Friday. “Therefore, a rate cut at this stage will be very premature and can be very, very risky. When your inflation is 5.5% and the next print is also expected to be high, you can’t be cutting rates at that point.” India’s retail inflation rose to a nine-month high of 5.49% in September, driven by a rise in food prices.

markets Analysis economy Matthews wellness Trade rights Need earnings growth to keep Indian stock market going: Mark Matthews
"Geopolitical events do not seem to be causing any impact on the world economy. In fact, there is potential for some deceleration in geopolitical problems over the next 12 months," says Mark Matthews, Julius Baer. The disconcerting factor we were discussing is when it comes to the quarterly earnings back home, is there some sort of a sense of a slowdown that could be prolonged due to macro concerns in India? Mark Matthews: I do not know if it is macro concerns, but you are absolutely right. I think the major issue facing India now is the deceleration in earnings growth. And the Nifty will still clock around 10% earnings growth this year, but the most recent quarter, it is looking very flattish.

markets UPS CEO Analysis Trade Experts rights Wipro Management sees good momentum, hopes to bounce back in Q4 after a seasonal Q3
Srini Pallia, CEO, Aparna Iyer, CFO and Saurabh Govil, CHRO, Wipro in conversation with ET Now. CFO Iyer says that their guidance is based on the visibility that they have at the start of the quarter. The guidance is impacted by furloughs, fewer working days and softness in Europe. The large deals that we won also would take some time to ramp up. So, overall, the momentum seems good. Q3 is more about seasonality and hopefully they will bounce back in Q4. CEO Srini Pillai further says net-net, right now the BFSI segment is positive. He cannot predict what is going to happen in six months and six quarters from now, but as of now, they are seeing good momentum in that sector. What would you call the highlight for the second quarter and how would you rate the current demand environment? Srini Pallia: First, specifically in Q2, three of our four markets have sequentially grown, which is good news. In terms of sectors, we had two of them growing sequentially, two of them growing year on year, and of course we had manufacturing and energy and utilities which have sequentially de-grown. But in the context of the overall market, I see momentum picking up, especially in Americas for us, both Americas 1 and Americas 2, and also APMEA.

markets COST UPS wellness Trade reports rights Sandip Agarwal on what should investors do with Infosys, TCS, and Wipro stocks
"Tech Mahindra, Infosys all are up 40% in last six to eight months. So, large part of all positive news has been discounted and the stocks are trading at a very-very decent valuation I would put in that way," says Sandip Agarwal, Fund Manager, Sowilo Investment Managers. From these Q2 earnings from the likes of Infosys, Wipro, TCS and HCL Tech reporting numbers, how do you see this possibility of a gradual recovery? Is that going to take some more time you think, there is some softness before it actually comes through or is it really here? Sandip Agarwal: So, yes, I think it has been quite well summed up but let me put this into a perspective. See, you have to remember that barring Wipro, the best part of the year is gone by now because third and fourth quarter have their seasonal challenges. So, this year is gone from the perspective of sequential revenue growth or some positive surprise. Year over year growth could be better. So, everything is now FY26. So, from that perspective and I have been reiterating this in every discussion we had earlier also that things will improve in terms of revenue growth and margins substantially from here on, but also remember that market is very forward-looking and they have all these IT stocks, if you see in last six months they have given phenomenal returns. Tech Mahindra, Infosys all are up 40% in last six to eight months. So, large part of all positive news has been discounted and the stocks are trading at a very-very decent valuation I would put in that way.
