Meta watchdog raises 'serious questions' on anti-immigrant posts
Meta's independent content watchdog said Thursday there were «serious questions» about how the social media giant deals with anti-immigrant content, particularly in Europe. The Oversight Board, established by Meta in 2020 and often called its «supreme court», launched a probe after seeing a «significant number» of appeals over anti-immigrant content. The board has chosen two symbolic cases-one from Germany and the other from Poland-to assess whether Meta is following human rights law and its own policies on hate speech.

Post recent correction, utilities & industrials looking attractive: Jitendra Sriram
Jitendra Sriram, Senior Fund Manager, Baroda BNP Paribas MF, says post the recent correction in the market, the utility space is definitely looking promising because of the energy demand that is coming in our economy and the kind of reactive steps that the utility sector is taking is definitely positive. That looks fairly interesting and even pockets of industrials are looking fairly interesting because the government was a little slow in the first half because of all the election dynamics, code of conduct and all these things. Further, Sriram says, one needs to keep the auto sector on the radar, but it could still shape up much better than what people are expecting. What is your take on the FMCG sector because over the last six or three months or so, we have been betting on the FMCG sector and there have been murmurs around the fact that a rural recovery is underway, the urban recovery is already there and maybe things will look better for the FMCG sector? Jitendra Sriram: It should happen because the monsoons have been fairly normal, and we would expect that at least the rural demand should start picking up.

Amnesty International highlights human rights violations in Pakistan ahead of UN review
Amnesty International announced on Wednesday that Pakistan is set for its second review by the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva on October 17 and 18, emphasizing that "human rights violations and abuses are still widespread." This review falls under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Pakistan is a signatory, according to the rights organization's statement. The organization highlighted several concerning issues reported in the past month, including two extrajudicial killings of blasphemy suspects by police, crackdowns on protests, the enactment of the restrictive Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024, arbitrary detention and mass arrests of opposition workers and leaders, a ban on the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM), and harassment of human rights defenders like Mahrang Baloch.

Nikhil Kamath on the great housing debate: Why he opted to buy over rent
Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, gathered industry titans to discuss one of the most debated topics in personal finance: buying a home versus renting. Kamath was joined by Irfan Razack, Chairman & MD of Prestige Group, Nirupa Shankar, Executive Director at Brigade Group, and Karan Virwani, CEO of WeWork India. The discussion revealed key insights into the advantages and challenges of each option. Kamath, who has long favored renting, shed light on the uncertainty that often comes with renting. “The thing with renting, of all the advantages of renting, there is one disadvantage: you don’t have foresight as to when you can move out of the house. I had to move out of this house, whereas I might have liked to stay longer in this house,” he said. Kamath explained that the inconvenience of having to move often sways people toward buying their own homes.
