Back at Olympics after 40 years, Venezuela's 60-year-old trap shooter Martinez vows to carry on till LA28
Venezuelan trap shooter Leonel Martinez, age is just a number. He is back at the Olympics after 40 long years and is not ready to walk into the sunset just yet. Martinez finished 28th in men's trap competition of the Paris Games, missing only nine of his 125 shots. It was his second Games appearance after the Los Angeles Olympics back in 1984. The next edition of the mega event will be staged in Los Angeles and Martinez says it is only fitting he finishes from where he started four decades ago. «I have a light inside guiding me towards Los Angeles 2028. That is the future for me. The work for that starts right now. I will be working with my body and with my mind. This sport is 90 per cent mental,» said Martinez, who is not a firm believer in sports science.

Joe Biden takes a dig at Barack Obama over gay marriage. Why does he refer to incident taking place 12 years ago? The Inside Story
US Presidential Election 2024 is coming near, old skeletons are tumbling out of the cupboard. After former US President Barack Obama persuaded Joe Biden to step aside, the incumbent president has come out attacking the first black president in a different and unexpected way. Taking a dig in an unexpected way, the president recalled an incident that took place in 2012 and said how he forced Obama to change his stance on same-sex marriage. When being asked by reporters about his “legacy for LGBTQ Americans”, Biden said that he was the first person to come out for gay marriage and he is proud of it, reports 'The Telegraph'. He also asked the people present there if they remember that little problem with the Obama administration.

Indian market getting over-valued. I wish it would pull back and rest a little bit: Mark Matthews
Mark Matthews, MD, Julius Baer, says he wishes there would be a pullback in the Indian market. It is becoming overvalued. Matthews further says that there does seem to be some sectoral rotation going on. In India, the growth is the opposite of what it is in the US. In the US, value is smallcaps and growth is big caps and in India, it is the other way around. I think there are a lot of emerging sectors in India that are small now but will be big sectors in the future like hospitality, defence which are in the midcap space and I would say those are the growth areas that long-term one would do well to be in. Everything is moving on expected lines and I look at the market from the prism of the US Fed. The US Fed pretty much has said what everybody was expecting, growth is decent and rate cuts will start. Mark Matthews: I did not expect them to be so overt in telling us there will be a rate cut in September. They did not need to because the market is already pricing one in. I felt that was interesting. There was no urgency in the statement or Jerome Powell's comments to the press but the most interesting thing is there was a sentence in the statement for two years saying that inflation was the most important criterion and that was replaced with the dual mandate of inflation, but also employment.

Sebi’s right about the derivatives boom: The market’s tail mustn’t wag the dog
₹5 lakh to ₹15-20 lakh, higher upfront margins to be paid for trades, allowing only one weekly expiry per exchange (as opposed to daily), and the intraday monitoring of position limits. These and other steps would be in addition to the action it took earlier. On its part, the Centre’s budget has doubled the securities transaction tax on futures and options.

Consumer stocks to lead the rally for at least a year or more: Gaurav Dua
Gaurav Dua, SVP, Head — Capital Market Strategy, Sharekhan By BNP Paribas, says consumer is a structural story. What you are going to see is that the household income is going to more than double over the five to eight years in India and that is the space where we see that there are going to be lot of multi-baggers that will be available at the right price for the investors. Let us start with the unsecured lending side of the business. UGro, Five-Star, SBFC, have been doing very good numbers in the last few quarters. I am seeing some of them flow out in this quarter as well. But the fear is that asset quality may come at risk now and hence the valuations have got depressed in that area. Is it an opportunity to build in portfolios or will you still stay away from this side? Gaurav Dua: The fact that some of the states have already started to announce farm loan waivers is something which is like this concerning the market because if you are exposed to the microfinance industry or you have a high exposure to this unsecured loan, this basically spoils the whole borrower attitude, basically. This has been one of the risks. In the case of private sector banks, cost of funds are likely to go up and that is an additional concern about these NBFCs.

Markets ought to be going down but continue to rise. Dinshaw Irani explains why
Dinshaw Irani, CEO, Helios Mutual Fund, says they have not been very adventurous in their shopping list and instead been fairly cautious. They have moved away from midcaps to a larger extent as they believe that midcaps are fairly overpriced. Helios is okay with the largecaps though given that they are still at a PE of some 21-odd forward earnings which is fairly reasonable given the kind of growth seen in the largecaps. In the smallcap space also, they are being cautious. What is your market view? We can endlessly argue that markets should go down, but the fact is they are up. What does that indicate? Dinshaw Irani: Look at what the earnings are doing. If you look from March quarter onwards, there has been roughly around a 5% cut in earnings on the Nifty or the indices as such, roughly 5% across both the broader indices and the narrow indices. And what has the market done? It has gone up 11%. Even this quarter I think roughly around 28 odd companies have reported in Nifty and the earnings growth is 3%.
