North Atlantic right whales, ‘exceptionally rare’ and soon may go extinct, spotted in Ireland
ocean mammals, are believed to number fewer than 350 as of 2023. The creatures could face extinction within 20 years.“This is an exceptionally rare record for the eastern Atlantic, where this species has been largely absent for decades, if not longer. We can make a convincing argument that the last positive identification of this species in Ireland dates back to 1910," the IWDG said.A post shared by Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (@irishwhaleanddolphingroup)North Atlantic right whales are large and dense creatures known for their curiosity and acrobatics.

Gucci’s owner lost his patience. What came next was a grand reinvention.
LONDON : Hours before a star-studded runway show at the Tate Modern museum in May, Gucci’s billionaire owner, François-Henri Pinault, huddled with his newly installed leadership team at its London office to figure out where one of the world’s most iconic brands was headed. With his wife, actress Salma Hayek, preparing for the show at a nearby hotel, Pinault pushed his team to define where Gucci should position itself in the market: higher than it is but not too high. His executives presented plans to pare back the many iterations of the interlocking GG logo and better harmonize the brand’s aesthetics.

Plea in SC seeks direction to Centre, states for steps to eradicate superstition, sorcery
Supreme Court seeking directions to the Centre and states for taking appropriate steps to eradicate the menace of superstition, sorcery and other similar practices. The plea says a strict anti-superstition and sorcery law is urgently needed to do away with the unscientific acts prevalent in the society that adversely impact the community and also to prevent fake seers from exploiting innocent people. The petition, filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, has also sought directions to the Centre and states for taking steps to develop a scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform among the citizens in the spirit of Article 51A of the Constitution, which deals with fundamental duties. «Petitioner is filing this writ petition as PIL under Article 32 seeking appropriate writ, order or direction to Centre and states to take appropriate steps to control superstition and sorcery in order to secure the fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 21, 25 of the Constitution,» the plea, filed through advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey, says.

We see the Budget as being neutral for the Rupee: Abhishek Goenka
CPI print at -0.1% is the lowest in four years. Fed members have been reiterating that they want to be more confident about inflation reaching the 2% target and the latest June inflation print should help in that regard. Donald Trump 2024: The Unifier
Donald Trump, sombre and bandaged, accepted the GOP presidential nomination on Thursday at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in a speech that described in detail the assassination attempt that could have ended his life just five days earlier before laying out a sweeping populist agenda, particularly on immigration. The 78-year-old former US President, known best for his bombast and aggressive rhetoric, began his acceptance speech with a softer and deeply personal message that drew directly from his brush with death. Moment by moment, the crowd listening in silence, Trump described standing onstage in Butler, Pennsylvania, with his head turned to look at a chart on display when he felt something hit his ear. He raised his hand to his head and saw immediately that it was covered in blood. «If I had not moved my head at that very last instant, the assassin's bullet would have perfectly hit its mark,» Trump said. «And I would not be here tonight. We would not be together.»

Centre should stop stepmotherly treatment towards Delhi, give city its due in Budget: Atishi
Atishi on Friday demanded Rs 10,000 crore from the Centre for infrastructure development, claiming the city government got nothing in return over the past year despite its income tax contribution of Rs 2 lakh crore. Delhi also provided Rs 25,000 crore as central GST to the pool of taxes, the minister said during a press conference here. Ahead of the presentation of the Centre's annual budget, Atishi batted for release of more money to Delhi, saying it could be spent on infrastructure development in road, transport and power sectors as well as to beautify the city. Asserting that people of Delhi are the highest income tax payers, the minister said, «Delhi should get Rs 10,000 crore from the Rs 2.07 lakh crores that people of the city pay as income tax. This amount of Rs 10,000 crore is just 0.25 per cent of the Central government's budget and only 5 per cent of the income tax of Delhiites.»

RTE quota: HC junks Maharashtra govt notification giving conditional exemption to private schools
Bombay High Court on Friday quashed the Maharashtra government's notification that exempted private schools within a one-kilometre radius of government or aided schools from Right to Education (RTE) Act quota admissions. A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar said the notification dated February 9 was «ultra vires» to Article 21 of the Constitution of India and provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, also known as the RTE. «The notification is held to be null and void,» the court said. The court, in its judgment, said the mandate of the law casts a duty not only on the government but also on private unaided schools to provide education to children in the age group of six to 14 years from the disadvantaged section of society.

What are the key areas the government will focus on in Budget 2024? Sajjid Chinoy answers
«Gross taxes last year were much more stronger than was envisaged in the interim budget. They actually grew at a very healthy pace of 13.5%. So, even if you make conservative assumptions for this year, the government is likely to have more tax revenues than was envisaged back in February and then of course the RBI dividend that the government got was more than double of what had been budgeted back then,» says Sajjid Chinoy, India Chief Economist, JPMorgan. I understand that you have been part of certain meetings also with the finance minister, etc, and the ministry. Talk to me about what are the big focus areas and what they are talking or concerned about right now. Sajjid Chinoy: I think there are two issues to look for in next week's budget. The first is to look closer at the fiscal math and here the government enters next week's budget with significantly increased degrees of fiscal freedom. And what do I mean by that? If you look at compare next week's budget with one in February, I think the government over kind of delivered on fiscal consolidation last year, the budget deficit for last year was 5.8%, the actual number was 5.6 and the target for this year was set at 5.1.

Donald Trump wants to weaken the US dollar: Can he?
Unless US President Joe Biden lets another Democrat contest this year’s election, Republican candidate Donald Trump seems all but sure to win the White House. It’s not just opinion polls. Consider the contrast in optics: A visibly ageing Biden who looked stumped at a key debate versus a fist-pumping Trump who arose unshaken from the snick of an assassin’s bullet.

Be cautious, wall of money driving markets; global market-related sell-off could come: Sandip Sabharwal
Sandip Sabharwal, asksandipsabharwal.com, says tax relief for reviving consumption is essential because consumption is one part of the entire growth basket which has been deeply lagging. Consumption growth has been half the GDP growth. Ultimately GDP growth cannot be sustained unless consumption revives, so that is something we need to see. Markets have been rising almost every day. This kind of frenzied rise did not last. So, people who have a short-term orientation need to be very careful right now. The market rally continues to build. One is just waiting for a dip to buy. Do you see that imminent? Maybe after Budget a sell-off is expected or do you think just deploy, do not wait for that dip at all? Sandip Sabharwal: It makes sense to wait; you cannot buy stocks at all prices. You need to buy and wait for the right opportunity. Now the opportunity will come. We are entering into a phase where the markets are going into a frenzied kind of up move and eventually, we will see a sell-off come in. Now whether that happens next week or next month, it is very tough to break the exact timelines, but it could also be correlated to a correction in the global markets and that could also have a rub-off in India.
