32-year-old macro trader leaves $50m hedge fund job with possible clawback risk
John Curtice, the 32-year-old macro trader who joined hedge fund Millennium earlier this year on a package allegedly worth $50m has left again. Bloomberg reports that his apparently inadvertent exit followed a ‘net low single digit loss,’ and claims that Curtice exceeded guidance on his risk limits. However, Bloomberg also says that Curtice’s trades didn’t hit a limit that would actually trigger a stock loss. Instead, the fund is said to have had multiple ‘discussions’ about risk limits with him before he left.

Rule of law umbrella concept to protect citizens against State's power: SC
rule of law is an umbrella concept to protect citizens against the power of the State and it is necessary for democracy and good governance, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday. Laying down pan-India guidelines on demolition of properties, the apex court said the rule of law ensures that actions of the government and its authorities are governed by established legal principles, rather than arbitrary discretion. «Ensuring the preservation of the principle of rule of law and the protection of the civil rights and liberties of citizens is essential for protecting constitutional democracy,» a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan said in its 95-page verdict. It said the law must be just and fair and should protect the human rights and dignity of all members of the society.

Is equity market heading for a prolonged slowdown? Vetri Subramaniam answers
«It can work it off by coming down sharply, as it has done a few times in the past or it can just go nowhere for a while and allow the earnings to catch up because as a result valuations will automatically correct as those earnings come through,» says Vetri Subramaniam, CIO, UTI AMC. For the first time, there is real pain and agony to be felt in this market after many-many years. Do you think we have taken a decisive turn in equity markets and we could be in for a long winter? Vetri Subramaniam: This business of predicting whether it will be winter, summer, spring is not really my forte. And after 25-30 years of doing this, I have come to the conclusion that nobody can really forecast this stuff beforehand. I will just stick to what I have been telling you and maybe that may have been our last conversation as well. The markets were pretty pricey in terms of valuations and history has taught us that when the market is pricey in terms of valuations, there are two ways in which it can work it off.

Panic buying: Women stockpile abortion pills in U.S before Donald Trump takes over as President
abortion medication in greater than usual numbers. One of the biggest providers of abortion pills, Aid Access, said it received 10,000 requests for the drug in the 24 hours following the Republican nominee's election call early Wednesday. That's about 17 times the 600 requests the organization normally receives in a day, as quoted in a report by The Washington Post. According to Just the Pill, a nonprofit that uses telemedicine to prescribe abortion drugs, 22 out of 125 orders it received between Wednesday and Friday came from non-pregnant individuals. Julie Amaon, the group's interim executive director, stated that soliciting such an advance provision is typically rare.

Trump's win should force Trudeau to make Canada more tax competitive, but don't count on it
Like many Canadians, I was glued to the non-stop coverage of the election results in the United States last week, with my tax brain going into overdrive thinking about how Canada would respond to a high-tax-loving Kamala Harris win versus a low-tax-high-tariff Donald Trump win, which ultimately came to pass.

Attempts to change the people are as much part of history as embrace of the status quo
...the people Had squandered the confidence of the government And could only win it back By redoubled work. Would it not in that case Be simpler for the government To dissolve the people And elect another? — Die Losung (The Solution), Bertolt Brecht, 1953 Brecht, of course, was mocking the Stalinist government of East Germany, against which the people had staged an uprising in 1953, only for it to be crushed. However, there is a strong case for stripping Brecht's solution of installing a new people of all irony, and adopting it as the primary project of redemption around the world, given the kinds of leaders who get elected. Does this sound frivolous? Or worse, elitist? Instead of moulding yourself to find acceptance among the people who had rejected you, isn't it pure conceit to hope to change them, rather than change yourself?

Did Oprah Winfrey charge a hefty fee of $1 million to share the stage with Kamala Harris? TV presenter breaks silence, here's what she said
Oprah Winfrey speaks out about allegations that she received $1 million for her unsuccessful Kamala Harris campaign. When questioned about whether she received payment for her endorsement by a TMZ reporter on Monday, the TV personality responded that she was paid nothing, ever. Last week, the Washington Examiner revealed that Harris's campaign had paid Winfrey's media company, Harpo Productions, for a live, star-studded interview in October, as quoted in a report by The Independent.
