India is likely to see above-average rainfall this month and a delayed withdrawal of monsoon showers, the weather office said, raising concern that it may hit output of kharif crops such as pulses, oilseeds, and fruits and vegetables. Rainfall is likely to be more than 109% of a 50-year average, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. Above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of India, except some parts of the extreme north, many parts of south peninsular India, and most parts of the northeastern region where normal to below-normal rainfall is likely.

India's financial capital recorded 11,628 property registrations in the month of August, marking a 7% on-year increase in deals. The robust performance helped the state exchequer collect over Rs 1,061 crore, reflecting a 31% rise in revenue, according to data from the Inspector General of Registration (IGR) and Controller of Stamps, Maharashtra. The city’s consistent sales momentum has been driven by sustained buyer confidence, surpassing 10,000 units in monthly registrations for the first eight months of 2024. This marks eleven consecutive months of annual growth since August 2023.

Chhattisgarh's Dantewada administration has imposed a penalty of Rs 1,620.5 crore on the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) for alleged violations of mining laws in the district. NMDC, a central public sector unit, has called this move «completely inappropriate,» claiming that the penalty was levied «solely and blindly without considering the facts and circumstances in the case.» The NMDC operates mining activities in the Bailadila hills, encompassing the Kirandul village under the Bacheli tehsil of Dantewada. Dantewada collector Mayank Chaturvedi directed the NMDC to deposit the penalty within 15 days, as per a letter dated August 29, Press Trust of India reported. The collector stated that the NMDC's clarifications in response to the show cause notices issued by the district administration were unsatisfactory. According to the letter, the NMDC violated Chhattisgarh mining excavation, transportation and storage rules. NMDC has contested this penalty. The NMDC, in a statement, claimed the Dantewada collector proposed to levy penalty and compensation to the tune of Rs 1,620.5 crore for alleged transport of iron ore without a railway transit pass (RTP), and thereby alleging contravention of the various provisions of different mining laws.

economic growth decelerated to 6.7% in the April-June quarter of 2024, marking a 15-month low. This slowdown contrasts sharply with the 8.2% growth recorded in the same period last year. According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, the primary reason for this slowdown was reduced government spending due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Das noted, «The Reserve Bank projected a growth rate of 7.1% for the first quarter. However, the first advance estimation data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed the growth rate at 6.7%.»

The study, which adds to existing knowledge of animal communication, was conducted by a team from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and published in the journal Science. This finding follows earlier research that showed wild African elephants also use name-like calls to address individuals. David Omer, lead researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, explained that the study recorded natural conversations between pairs of marmosets and interactions between monkeys and a computer system. The researchers found that marmosets specifically used «phee-calls» to address individual members of their group, and these calls were correctly perceived and responded to by the intended recipients. «They (the monkeys) also perceived and responded correctly to calls that were specifically directed at them,» the authors wrote.

Nifty 50 Index ended the week on a very strong note. Witnessing a strong momentum on the upside, the markets expanded their trading range as well. All these things point at the markets deviating from their mean once again; this leaves them prone to volatile profit-taking bouts once again at higher levels.

Manish Narwal earned the silver medal in the men's 10m air pistol SH1 category, accumulating 234.9 points despite initially dropping to sixth place during the competition.

The quarterly figure was in line with an ET poll median estimate of 6.85%, slipping from 7.8% in the last quarter of FY24 and 8.3% in the year before. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had forecast 7.1% growth for the quarter. However, gross value added, which strips out indirect tax and subsidies, is estimated to have grown 6.8% compared with 6.3% in the preceding quarter. «India was the fastest-growing major economy in the June quarter. Data shows better alignment between demand and supply sides of the economy in the quarter,» said chief economic adviser V Anantha Nageswaran.
